  • This is fine! It's just a number, why all the fuss?

It really depends, I have played characters that had stats that low, in more than one campaign but I could also ask for a reroll or use a standard array.
I generally allow a reroll, or use the standard array.

I had a low INT run into the party.

It depends?

I normally go into character creation with an idea about what concept I want to play, and not all concepts work with an extremely low score. Some will, or can be made to, but sometimes you just want at least minimal competence.

My regular DM uses 4d6 drop lowest, but with the caveat that if you don’t roll any scores 8 or below, your lowest score becomes 8. Which is a nice idea, and one I’m going to pinch next time I think. We have two games going currently and I’ve dumped Strength both times (8 for the warlock, 5 for the artificer, and it worked well for the concept both times). I was wondering whether we’d only see Str and Cha used as dump stats, but it’s actually more varied than that. Con is the only stat nobody’s dumped across two games.

Back in 2nd ed I remember a player whose character had a 4 CON - because they wanted to play a Diviner and that's the way the stats had to be placed - and they had a lot of fun describing how the character had to stop for breath at the top of a staircase and such.

This is most likely a re-roll.

By strict RAW the roll is invalid if:
*One or more dice fell on the floor.
*One or more dice ended up kinda crooked on the edge of a game book.
*You meant to roll this other d6 and not the "bad" one you happened to pick up.
*The DM didn't see you roll.
*You were really hoping for a higher number.

I hope that clears things up.

Rolling stats is dumb and I would never do it. But yeah anyways dumping Intelligence is always the right answer unless you're a Wizard or Artificer then dump Strength (maaaybe Charisma if you want heavy armor and care about movement speed).
