Your Favorite Halfling?

Which is Your Favorite Halfling?

I'm obligated to say kender (see my sig). That being said, they're tons of fun. ;) I know they have a bad rep, but they really revolutionized halflings. Got them out of the shire and into adventuring.

I like hobbits, but moreso in the Lord of the Rings. I'm not familiar enough with Pathfinder's halflings, but I like that they kind of go back to the roots of halflings, hairy feet and all. For a long while, I wanted to go back to the hairy foot archetype. Nowadays, I settle for them being a subrace of halflings. The Advanced Player's Guide calls them Shire Halflings. Works for me.

The 3rd edition halfling seemed more like a hodgepodge of various halfling races, with little identity of its own. I didn't care for it as well. Definitely some kender influence here, but it seemed like a watered-down version to me. I dunno.

The 4th edition halflings have a little more flavor. Still some of the themes have remained from 3e. Despite the similarities, I like this one better. The art in the PHB is just awesome. That alone makes a huge difference. Besides, I think I've settled on them drawing from kender some, but also being spunky scrappers. This is an archetype that has popped up a bit in gaming circles, seemingly all on its own.

The feral halflings of Dark Sun are all kinds of awesome. As mentioned above, it's neat when you're afraid of halflings!

One of the disappointments with non-burrow-dwelling halflings is that I can't litter my campaign with gratuitous bulette attacks on peaceful halfling communities. I do like a bit of gratuity.

If I had to pick one I'd say the original hobbit is the least annoying.

the AD&D halfling is just beating around the bush.

Darksun and Eberron halflings are trying too hard to be badass.

Kenders have topknots... Topknots!

Hawt sexy tight leather-clad Lidda... yummy
I never really saw the appeal. I mean she's hot ...if you ignore the fact that she's the height of a pre-schooler. If I want hot I go for elf or human (asian or simply short if you like them petite). Likewise, if I want a tough guy I pick something else. I can't take 3 or 4 foot races seriously, no matter how athletic or edgy they look.

I don't like halflings anyway. I merge them with gnomes and keep the best aspects of both.
They have childlike proportions (larger heads and extremities), live in hobbit holes or among humans in big cities and make good cooks, merchants, wizards or artificers (IMC elves are the charisma-based casters).
Halfling is just a name for young beardless adventuring gnomes who haven't found a vocation yet.

How different are they from 4E? One Stat?
The river gypsy thing.

I've always (in my homebrew) portrayed/seen them as the Jeff Dee halfling
The first pic is cool but the other one is terrible. Not just the halfling, everything. It's hard to believe it's the same artist or that this could make a book cover.

See, there is a female dwarf and she has a beard. Apparently, some guys are into that. :erm:

I always saw Halflings as extra-domesticated humans: an offshoot of the human race that was extra accustomed to unthreatened, peaceful lives and are excellent farmers (with a surprising amount of talent for trickery, sneaking and thievery if they put their minds to it). Now, nothing saying they couldn't make fine adventurers, but that it's just not common to their culture and generally seen as teenage rebellion or being intentionally counterculture if they go do it.

Of course, with any race (especially one as widespread as a main PC race) you'll get a lot of variations, so I generally see them as the first two options, but with minorities of the others (even the cannibalistic ones in tribes way out in the wilderness, as unto hobbits as cannibal tribes are to humans).

Belkar. . .well, Chaotic Evil, decently charismatic, low-wisdom sociopathic & homicidal ranger/barbarians could happen in any race, probably a little less likely in Hobbits than other races (like Elves, Half-Elves and Humans), but nothing saying there couldn't be a few like that out there.

I personally present Halflings as mullet-wearing, moonshine-swilling rednecks who do not take kindly to strangers and have no compunctions about stealing from non-Halflings. They tend to put on weight, and do not wear shoes.

On fire!!
(check out my avatar :p)

Seriously though... Lemon-curry.

I use a mix of Eberron & Darksun halflings
(nature loving dino-riding nomads who have a reputation for being cannibals. In their defense, they're much more likely to feed you to thier Clawfoot... clawfeet?... than eat you themselves).

Bilbo was classic. Dino-riders are awesome. Lidda was cute & useful.

However, I'm still going with CANNIBAL MIDGETS!

Cheers, -- N
