I wonder what the ratio of new players disliking Vancian to old players disliking Vancian is? There is no arguing that DnD magic is flashy, colorful, and deeply creative. It is simple to learn, remember and execute. And correct, there's nothing wrong with that. As an older player i just get tired of doing the same thing, and it's a real pleasure to use magic in a system that feels new and dangerous and "mystical." For newer players, Vancian magic probably is new and mystical enough without complicating if further.
