Your Favorite Region in the Forgotten Realms

Calimshan and Lake of Steam.

A good mix of ruins, cities, intrigue, and places to explore with a decent range of terrain types, people, and personalities.

All finely detailed in (what I consider to be) one of the best FR products in existence: the Empires of the Shining Sea box set.

Can't beat Waterdeep for one-shots; it's got everything you need in one place - undermountain, sewers, cosmopolitan city, and wild untamed forests outside. The only thing it's missing is a Lightning Rail. ;)

I loved the Vilhon Reach/Lake of Steam/Shaar regions before they were detailed. I set the Slave Lords series in the Lake of Steam region. Excellent for very swords & sorcery, Conan-style adventures with NPCs with names like Anzurdal Thuul and Murzog Khan. :D

Plus, flipping through the Shining South hardcover, I noticed that WOTC's thoughts about Blaskaltar, Shaar, Shar, and Shaarmid and my own definitely do not match. :heh:

Thay. Lot's of political and social intrigue in a high magic setting. Conflict all around with neighboring countries as well as internal struggles. Ruins to the north and south. Plenty of plot hooks to go anywhere else in the world.

My favorite is probably Waterdeep. Depends what is needed for an adventure, but you really can't go wrong with all this city and its environs has to offer (and is heavily documented by a sourcebook, Volo's Guide, and a box set!). But the Realms has something for everyone and picking one region as a favorite is pretty tough.
