Your Favorite Region in the Forgotten Realms

The Dales are the heart of the Realms, the here and the home. They're probably the most lovingly developed part, though most of this detail hasn't seen print. Waterdeep and Cormyr are good places to visit, but the Dales is where you return to.

I generally use the whole realms. Part of the adventure is getting there, so I make them wander. The areas I've used the most: The Sword Coast (Baldur's Gate/Candlekeep/Waterdeep/Neverwinter/Luskan), The Silver Marshes (Silverymoon/The High Forest/The Cold Wood), Cormyr (Suzail/Arabel/Eveningstar/The Storm Horns), Cormanthor (Shadowdale/Mistledale/Battledale/Deepingdale/Myth Drannor), The Vast (Tantras/Raven's Bluff/Procampur), The Bloodstone Lands [Cold Lands] (Bloodstone/Vassa/Damara), The Dragon Coast (Westgate), and soon to be using Turmish in a campaign.

I am going to have to go with the North/Silver Marches. The material on the area is really well written and gives great leads for adventures. The Silver Marches 3.0 book is great, but I have to say that the old "The North" boxed set is classic.

The city of Silverymoon is intriguing, and the politics of the land are pretty much in nascent stages, which always makes for interest in a game. The lands are ripe with adventure, and there are hooks everywhere. I really enjoy playing there, and reading about it as well.

That being said, if it is a one-shot, I might start in Waterdeep. It truly has something for everyone, as mentioned earlier by several others.

To answer your question about specifically staying away from documented areas, I have borne witness to such an act. On a PBEM that I play in, we started in Dragon Falls, in the Vast, and I am pretty certain that the eDM did that on purpose while he (and the rest of us) caught up on all the new material. Several of us, including him, had been out of the game since just after 2E came around. If you want avoid "metagaming" in your group, it might be the ticket to go to some far away land in the realms.

Good luck.

What is your favorite region in the Realms?
Undermountain

Is it documented by a source book?
Yep. Ruins of Undermountain 1 and 2 and various modules.

Did you specifically stay away from a source book documented area so you could borrow some FR fluff while still semi-homebrewing?
The area provides enough room for me to create, yet some background for me to build on.

What is the best thing about adventuring in your region?
The best thing of it is that it is a setting in which you are on the edge (at least that's how I DM it). It feels very much like the Alien movie, where you didn't know were the danger would come from.

Interesting geography? Constant political intrigue and turmoil? Interesting NPC organizations? Known for its unfound treasure hordes and the fierce dragons that protect them?
It is known for the hordes of treasure and for it's fatality rate.

Thanks, matt
You're welcome :)

Personally, I love the Moonshaes...
Woohoo, and here I thought I was going to be alone!

Definitely the Moonshae Isles. I just love that quasi Celtic/Nordic thing they got going. Though nothing new has come out for the Isles, all the old material is excellent and has served me quite well, providing me exactly the right mix of canon material and blank canvas where to paint my own stories.

After the Moonshaes, I like the Dalelands, with the North a close third.

Silver marches. I like the area west of Ascore, North of the nether mountains (including the nether mountains) south of the Ice Spires (including them) and east of Sundabar. There is nothing out there. Its hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Arctic and Desert meet there. In the Winter the desert is cold. In the summer its hot. Its Northern Anarouch so the terrain is interesting. The Morumes (a strange family of Blue Dragons) are not too far away. You have the town of Deadsnows, a really scary forest, Citadel Adbar (Xenophobic Dwarves), Barbarians, Orcs and a few little settlements and lots of history that has been forgotten. And a city some distance away but not impossible to get to. Most of it is covered in the Silver marches, the north, and the savage frontier supplements.

Aaron.

I'd have to say Cormyr is my favorite region. Parts of it can be safe regions to establish a home base and have families, yet there's lots of opportunity for adventure in and near Cormyr. It has a seacoast for naval adventures, and forests and mountains and lakes and rivers for outdoor adventures. It has a strong noble class for political intrigue stories. It's got a professional military if you're interested in military adventures. There are both war wizards and ancient ruins in nearby marshes for magic. And, it's fairly centrally located in Faerûn so it's less of a problem to get to nearly anywhere else! It's got something for everyone!
