Your first car

My first car is an '83 VW Vanagon Camper. It's currently unopperational, but my parents are getting it overhauled as a graduation present.

Yep, that's about it.

The first car my parents bought me was a 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 convertible. That thing was huge, and "tanbuck" was the color, which was sort of like hunter green, except uglier. An old maid school teacher that my Mom knew owned it, and babied it. It had a huge engine. But then, it had to, it weighed more than a tank. We called it the green dinosaur.

Once I got to college, I got a Cutlass Calais. The polar opposite. It was small, and zippy. I really liked it. The cassette deck would lock up, and I had to slam the console repeatedly to get it to unstick. Otherwise, it was a good car. I could zip through traffic in it. I think they had a lot of electrical problems, because you don't see many of them on the road anymore.

The first car I bought for myself was a '94 Ford Probe. I really liked that car. It was sharp.

After that was a '98 Chrysler Sebring. I really liked it, too, but it was expensive to fix when things needed fixing. I now have a "family" car - a 2001 Kia Optima.

Oddly enough, when I met my wife, we both drove Chrysler Sebrings. I had a friend in college who had an idea of starting a dating service solely based on the kind of car people drove. I think he was on to something.

'72 Super Beetle

Summer of 1986, I was a 16 year old high school junior, I bought a 1972 Super Beetle. Green. Very green, but very cool. The stereo was worth more than the car. I think I paid around 900$ or so for it.

A friend of mine had a 73 hardtop. We were driving along during a night time snowstorm whenthe windshield came loose and fell in on the dash. We had to drive 10 miles in a driving snow (VERY rare for Arkansas, but it was over 20 years ago...we still got snow then) with the wind and snow blinding us. Great fun!

1969 VW Microbus.

No seat belts(!) and manual everything. 6 volt battery and someone had ripped out all the back seats and carpeted the back. Holes in the floor so big your feet got wet going through puddles.

Man I miss that thing...

A 1997 Hyundai Accent - bought it brand new when I just got out of university and had started my career.

Had it for 5 years before I upgraded, and never had a problem with it.

'88 GMC Astro. Big clunky box, but had tons of space for whatever you wanted to lug around.

Next was an '83 Honda Accord (with Jaguar paint!). It was a much more solid car (ran forever), but sketchy A/C and radio.

Both of them lasted a really long time, but when they died, they were beyond hope.

1994 mazda 323 (3-door/hatchback) ... still running and getting over 30 mpg.

I've got one of those from 1998. It's called 323 C if I remember correctly. It's my first car and I've owned it since the day after 911. (I was thinking that this might not be a good day to buy a car but then decided that damn if I was going to let terrorists dictate my life.)

It looks like this: My car (without the racing additions). (I get 0.85 km/liter i.e. 27,5 mpg with the AC turned off.)
