Your first car

A 1978 Chevy Chevette. Which would be at least moderately impressive if I hadn't bought it in 1992.

Excellent. My first was also a 78 Chevette, in a lovely crap brown. I got it in 1988. Two months later my foot went through the driver's side floor, a la Fred Flinstone. I covered it with a floor mat and kept on driving for four months, until one of the rear shocks shot up into the hatchback.

Man, I loved that car.

Nothing like seeing the gas gauge drop 1/8 of a tank when you push the accelerator to the floor.

I had a 1972 Monte Carlo with the "Turbo-Hydramatic" transmission, 350 Short Block with 4 barrel carb under the hood. I can totally relate to the sudden disappearance of gas when the pedal hit the metal.

I miss that car so much.

1979 Ford Mustang - Cherry Red
There's nothing like the grumbling purr of a muscle car idling and then accelerating

My first car should actually be "cars" as I had two on the road at the same time right after high school.

The first was a '77 Cadillac (inherited from Mom) that got the nickname The Hotel California because several friends and I used to sleep in it after concerts and such. Horrible gas mileage, but easy to tinker with and fix on my own, although some parts were a bit pricey.

The second was a '63 Ford Galaxy 500 Convertible. What a big-ass, gas-guzzling, party mobile that was.

I eventually sold the Galaxy to my little brother when he went off to school, as I couldn't afford to keep both those monsters on the road anymore.

I'm trying to own a first car. If anyone would like to help me make some memories...
Y'know, that can be taken many ways... especially by those who's fondest memories of their first car relate to the back seat...

My first car was a 1977 Volvo 242. Drove it until 1997 or so. It used to be my dad's and I drove it extensively before it was "mine" -- the official handoff was when we got married in '94.

A friend of mine had a 73 hardtop. We were driving along during a night time snowstorm whenthe windshield came loose and fell in on the dash. We had to drive 10 miles in a driving snow (VERY rare for Arkansas, but it was over 20 years ago...we still got snow then) with the wind and snow blinding us. Great fun!

That reminds me of the family we passed on I-40 going to Little Rock one day. They had no windshield. They were all bundled up in the car, and the dad had these huge gloves on his hands, and they were driving down the road like that in the dead of winter.

It was funny, and yet painfully sad at the same time.

I drive I-40 every day from Conway to LR... the potholes probably knocked it out.

1977 Pontiac Sunbird - ugly red-orange in color. It had manual steering and manual brakes (I got it in 1991) and didn't like to start in the winter.

I actually think driving that thing made me a better driver since you had to react really fast in order to get it to stop quickly.

Funniest story about that car - it broke down in the inspection station. (In NJ they have government run stations where you can get your car inspected for free) There was a line so I put the car into park, when the line moved I couldn't get the car out of park. The cord in the shifter had snapped and was hanging out the bottom of the car.

Was there an outbreak of color blindness in the 1970s?
