Your greatest level span in a campaign?

I am genuinely curious: what in the world challenges you at level 40? Personally having trouble with the complexity of level 10 characters, I literally cannot get my head around remembering all relevant details of a level 40 PC! Are your games mostly social/pureroleplaying? Or do you fight entire armies? :)

A lot still challenges my players. Hell I nearly killed the Sorcerer 10/Fighter 10/Bladesinger*10 with 4 trolls each with 4 levels in a class. (Barbarian, cleric, Sorcerer, Ranger) . And The fact they nearly killed him before another player came in a rescued him and the trolls from each other was a surprise to me.

Role-playing social and political situations are probably a good 70% as fights tend to take a while to play out depending on how many characters involved on both sides. The players have a lot of allies (NPC's) they call up to help them so it can get fairly complicated.

Not really fighting armies per se yet, but taking on the VBBEG minions who are spread out around the world who are trying to bring about a massive change and downfall of everything and the players doing what ever they can to stop them and to stop a God War from happening tends to keep them tied up. Then there are the various kingdoms and city states that have tensions and possibilities of wars they are trying to stop. Plus they have a few kingdoms that have gotten on their “to be handled list” as soon as they can get around to them.

Challenging them is not a problem, watching the players try to figure out which block they pull out the stack before everything comes tumbling down is fun. And they give the ideas of where to go next or what ties in to other things without even knowing it.

*house version made before 3E version came out grants caster level increases, etc very specific to this campaign world.

Jumping from 11th level to 33rd-36th (varying character levels due to ECL differences) in an 8-month real-time span. We were levelling, at times, 2-3 times PER session! And having to pre-gen character sheets for around 3 or 4 levels worth PER game to be prepared for this. It was kinda maddening, keeping up.

Let see....

From level 9 to 18 in about 9 sessions.

And we only get XP from combat ;)

My highest level character ever.

The campaigns I played in usually died at around 5th level.

I can finally enjoy the fun of high level play.

Thanks...so am I at times, longest actual D&D campaign I've run ever. Most lasted a year to year and half with a span of maybe 10 levels tops.

I'm in one that's been running for about 3 years and went from 1st thru 10/11th. I came in when the party was about 3-4th level and I came in at 2nd. Now on my second character after the first one died for the third time. There's only 2 original characters left from the beginning of that game.
