Your (ideal) 5-Person (4e) Group?

weem

First Post
Looking over the PHB2 I started thinking - with all these options, what would make an "ideal" (well-balanced) group for a 4e campaign in your opinion?

I'm still thinking about this, but I wanted to post and see what you all thought. So, assuming a "standard" campaign where the PC's would, from level 1 to 30, face a wide range/variety of challenges, creatures etc...

1. What class and race combinations would your ideal 5 person group consist of?

2. Why? (of course).

I'm really looking forward to hearing these!

I have found the ideal groups are the ones that don't cover everything so equally. We have more fun when the group has a whole has strengths and weaknesses instead of being some artifically created min maxed group.

Right - so yea, I would agree. My groups (in both campaigns I am playing in are not well balanced) - still much fun. The group I run consists of 4 players and they make up the typical group of Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Wizard.

I'm not implying you would force this on players, nor am I looking for one to use (we are all set) - I'm just curious, if you had to put one together yourself and were trying to keep balance in mind, what would it be ;)

Haven't read PHB2 well enough to make a decision on those classes, but my PHB 1 balanced party was...

Dragonborn Fighter (guardian build, bastard sword + shield)
Eladrin Wizard (Orb, Focus on controllerly powers)
Dwarf Cleric (Lazer cleric, few melee powers for backup)
Halfling Rogue (Trickster build, lots of movement powers)
Human (or elven) Ranger (Archery + Twin Strike), though a tiefling feylock isn't bad for this role either.

I'm typically fond of two strikers (one melee, one ranged) but two leaders (esp a bard with multi-classing) might replace that...

I'm interested in seeing a party of...

Dwarven Fighter
Dwarven Cleric
Dwarven Invoker
Dwarven Paladin
Dwarven Ranger

it sounds fun.

Yea, nice! hehe - I was joking last weekend (I joined a 3rd campaign which will not play very regularly) that we should do all dwarves when 3 of the 5 chose that race. I can imagine all kinds of fun there - though I really like the idea of an all Goblin group as well, hehe.

Nice class setup there as well. One from the PHB2 - interesting.

So you have the Fighter/Cleric/Rogue/Wiz combo that my group has (that I run for), but you have an additional player as a ranger - that's gotta be nice. I'm not sure what I would add to that standard 4 combo if I was putting one together - doesn't matter TOO much after those 4... but yea, Ranger is good.

1) Dwarven Fighter, with Sword and Shield. I still think Fighters are the best defenders in the game.
2) Elven Druid. Haven't decided on the build. Seems like the best controller there would be.
3) Half-Orc barbarian. Seems like it'd be a nice damage dealer, without any major problems.
4) Half-Elven Bard (melee build). Because I want to play one SO bad. Also, it'd take paragon multi-classing.
5) Elven Ranger (archery). Because the group needs a ranged attacker.

For what it's worth, the group we're going to start with in a few weeks is:

1) Half-Elven Bard, melee build (yours truly) - will multi into sorcerer.
2) Genasi Swordmage, Aegis of Assault.
3) Druid of unknown race.
4) Beastmaster Ranger of unknown race.

If I had to add one to that, I'd throw in a paladin, to supplement healing. Or a warlord, to keep someone else on the frontline.

Fighter. Shifter or Dwarf.
Half-Orc Rogue.
Bard.
Druid.
Cleric.

I think this group is very versatile, yet very solid, as far as healing, melee, and options.

In all honesty, part of the group's real backbone is the rogue. The druid and the cleric's powers are easy to help facilitate the rogue with combat advantage, while the rogue focuses on shivving the ever living snot out of anything that moves.

Meanwhile, the bard and fighter run interference, locking down or weakening threats. The Bard is also about getting people out of sticky situations.
