Your level of devotion to the fantasy

This past Saturday (Oct. 5) I attended the opening weekend of the Texas Renaissance Festival. Saw lots of great costumes, both historical and fantasy. But one thing I saw was a little unnerving.

My friends and I saw lots of people wearing fake pointy elven ears. Some were well done, and used makeup to hide where they joined onto the real ear. Some looked pretty cheesy.

Then we saw this one guy walk past. His looked pretty real. But they also had some strange-looking indentations on them. Then it hit me: he had had his ears surgically altered into elf ears! My friends said "no way."

We caught up to him and asked. And I was right. He had found a plastic surgeon willing to clip his ears and pinch them together into points. The indentations were from the stitches/staples used to hold the ears together until they grew together properly.

Has anyone else heard of this or seen anyone who has had this done? Would you do something like this to yourself? I've heard of goths/"Vampire" afficiandos who have had their teeth fashioned into fangs, and I've seen people who wear fantasy-inspired contacts to alter the look of their eyes. But actual surgery to permanently alter a highly visable part of my body? That's a little too extreme for me.

However, if it makes him happy, who am I to judge him?

You are absolutley right to judge him. A choice like that is just begging to be laughed at. As he is free to get his ears done, we are free to point and say "DORK!".

Body mod'ing is in a pretty crude stage right now. You get your piercings, scars, tats, and minor surgical alterations. Just wait until more radical techniques are easier, cheaper, and safer.

And then there's the future. How about transforming yourself into a real representation of Tolkien dwarf? Want to be a dolphin for a day? Or how about experiencing what it's like to be an australopithecus. Or how about true multitasking with a bi-cameral brain? This is just the tip of the iceberg. Far future of course, but easily plausible. They'll look back at elf-ear guy and not even raise an elven eyebrow.
