Your preferred name for the Queen of Spiders

"On behalf of the Fiends of Gehenna union local #616 I have to state that we personally would prefer if Mrs Spider Queen would instruct her followers to pray to her as Lolth. A ton of spider kissing mortals calling out of Lloth sounds disturbingly like the abbreviation for yugoloth: 'loth. And frankly our ears are burning in an unpleasant manner, so please, go with Lolth."

And wasn't Lloth originally just a spelling error that got repeated? I've also not seen it outside novels. As far as I know, all of the realms sourcebooks say Lolth.

Personally I love the Welsh, but apparently there is still an old law on Chester's records that says if you find a Welshman within the confines of our city walls after dark, you can run him through with impunity! Might not help the modern local economy, since most of the city centre is within the walls, but hey who am I to argue?

I heard you were allowed to shoot them with a bow & arrow. Either way, I wouldn't advise trying to excercise that right...

I voted for the king of Gnolls option, as that seemed closest to an 'other': I like her as Lloth in the Realms and Lolth in Greyhawk.

I also like drow-as-in-hoe in FR and drow-as-in-now in GH. EDIT: Of course, the launch of Eberron left me in something of a quandry...

One of Salvatore's many retconned decisions in his early books...I don't think he could make up his mind back then. He had Drizzt as a ranger of Gwaeron Windstrom until he retconned it to Mielikki later on when he did the prequels (compare his Gwaeron Windstrom holy symbol in early printings of The Crystal Shard to the Mielikki symbol he got from Montolio in Sojourn). Maybe it was because Wulfgar was originally planned as the protagonist of the series until Drizzt became such a fan favourite. Additionally, Cattie Brie spoke like a normal, non-annoying human being in early printings, until they retconned in her annoying-to-read accent.

Cunningham had to work with the 'Lloth' hand she'd been dealt, but other than that, her writing seems consistent (or at least non conflicting from much that I've seen) with previous Realmslore (for example, it doesn't ignore the existence of Eilistraee)

All things considered, give the poor goddess Lolth her real name instead of being an apologist

how is the Welsh double-L pronounced, anyway?

The best advice for those who can't ask a Welsh person to say it for them is to imagine that the sound is HL - start sounding a 'huh' and slide into 'luh'. It's not quite correct but pretty close.

EDIT: oh, and on topic, I agree that I see LLoth as either the Welsh or Spanish pronunciations, so that spelling doesn't work for me.

Do we know how Lloth first became to be used, anyway?

I don't have an opinion, because I find Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms drow uninteresting. If there was a Queen of Spiders in my game, it would be, you know, a spider goddess.
