Pathfinder 1E You're the CEO of PAIZO. Now What?

Looking at a Pathfinder rules revision, I think I'd want to continue to emphasise compatibility with the broad base of d20/3e-based product, and retain complexity in areas the bulk of the fan base wants (multiclassing, spells, arguably skills) while cleaning up the d20/3e combat rules to improve the at-table play experience. I would also be looking at more work on ensuring non-spellcaster classes remain viable compared to full-progression casters into double figure levels. For perception reasons it's easier to do this by continuing to boost non-casters, rather than nerf casters.

Which 3pp adventures and setting products for 4E D&D have been selling like hotcakes?
Which 3pp adventures and settings for 4e D&D are anywhere near Paizo level?

At the nearby FLGSs, the owners mentioned the Goodman 4E modules sell around two or three copies for each new release, typically purchased by the same two or three individuals every time. (The older Goodman 4E modules typically collect dust for months at a time afterward). They also mentioned the XRP 4E modules have largely been collecting dust, and new releases sell very few copies. (The XRP 1-on-1 and OSRIC modules sell a lot better).

Considering the quality, I am not surprised if no one is buying the XRP adventures. As for the GG ones, I have no idea how many of each module a store has to sell in order for the module to be considered a success for a 3pp - do you?

No idea. Joe Goodman most likely keeps these figures close to the chest.

Of the FLGS in town, only one stocks any Goodman titles. The other ones don't even bother with any 4E 3pp titles.

From the FLGS side, the only "success" criteria I've heard mentioned by the owners over the years, is when a particular title is backordered more than once.

Obviously, I can not comment on XRP's 4E stuff, but I know they were considered a really high quality publisher in the OGL days.

Do you have any opinion why it is that 4E 3PP is so consistently rated as poor quality by you?

WotC modules gets panned consistently for being underwhelming. Is there any reason other than the WotC name that poor quality explains 3PP but not Wotc?

Paizo's boards have a 3PP subforum that is quite active. And while there is, of course, some items that are crap, there is a lot of really good product there. What do you suspect is the difference?

*thinks of new thing to do as Paizo CEO - hopefully not repeated in another person's post*

I would consider toying with a new comic line to support the AP line during gameplay. The comics would offer non spoiling details and depth to the game characters and setting during game play. Players could pass the comics around at the game table. It would leave the large burden of the story telling on the GM where it belongs, but it would give players secondary sources of information and some entertainment for the parts where things slow down - for whatever reason.

I am mucking with my own comics that do something similar at my own game table. The local print shop is working with me to find something that works - yay for friends in the print shop business.

Comics would be neat. They do have a short story that goes with every issue of an AP already.

Truth hurts.
Paizo doesn't owe you anything. But they get hounded and hounded.
This is awesome!

I totally dig Paizo. I have bought many of their products and I am very happy that they are having success with Pathfinder. Heck I just renewed my subscription so I could get Kingmaker. I have spent well over $1000 on Paizo products.

End disclaimer....

But the part I quoted above is so awesome! <sarcasm>

[EDIT: My comments aren't directed specifically at BryonD, he just happened to be the one who made the comment. Please see this post for clarification.]

I recall when WOTC announced 4e, and when they decided not to renew the Dragon/Dungeon license with Paizo (done well in advance, professionally and without animosity). I also recall when they were slow with the GSL, and had decided that it wouldn't be as open as the OGL.

There were scads of posts claiming that WOTC screwed their customers something fierce, that they fired their customers, that they OWED them something. And they got hounded and hounded.

Isn't the quote above an example of the pot calling the kettle black?

RPG fans are an interesting bunch... :)
