I solved this by offering hints to PCs with higher intelligence. It allowed me to include puzzles without simply letting them roll dice.

I'm a 4E neutral as well. I'm not fond of the Dragonborn and Tieflings being core races. For me, the idea of a core set of rules allows for different settings to build off of (Eberron, Etherscope, Forgotten Realms, Planscape). Dragonborn have an Eberron feel to me, and I associate Tieflings...

Does a "maybe" count? After 4E comes out, I'll take a look. If I like what I see, I'll make the switch. Otherwise, we'll either stay with 3.5 or go back to 1E for a change.

With 3E, there weren't publishers losing money while they waited for the SRD. With 3.5, the mechanics were the same. 3.5 was more like 3E with errata.

I believe that's why they were only offering the SRD to proven 3rd party publishers. I've been pleased with the quality of products churned out by the surviving 3E companies. I take it that you haven't? You'd prefer that the SRD be withheld from proven publishers? Interesting. I see it...

The 3rd party publishers have employees to pay. The later they receive the SRD, the more it pushes back their release schedule. The further their release schedule gets pushed back, the longer they have to go with very little money coming in.
