"You mean to say that lizard is with you willingly?" The guards look at each other in disbelief and then back to Jarel-karn. "And what was that about his health?"

"...rip out their spines..." says Toeto in a low voice at exactly the wrong moment.

The second guard, a human man with a nasty scar on his face, chimes in. "I knew it - he's as mad as the rest of them! Your company's lucky he didn't turn on you at night and murder the lot of you in your sleep. Why, we should put him down before he infects us all." The man draws his longsword from his sheath while the half-elf maintains a relaxed posture.

"We can't let him into the city at any rate. It's bad enough the lizards spread their plague to the Beggar's Quarter. It would be a disaster if the dockworkers got sick too."

Men! Beatrice says huffily accidentally dropping the lizard women. For starters "he" is a "she" you ignorant buffoon! And secondly she is not sick, just drunk. I'm sure you can tell what it looks like to be drunk, she says insinuating that the guard likes strong beverages himself.

Ah blast, this is not working. Beatrice mutters.

Eithal moves to the fore of the group, her seven feet and seven inchest towering over the poor guards, "Git owtta th' way yew brahnie bayastahds," She reaches over her shoulder and puts her hand on the handle of her massive axe, "...befowah Ah give yew a hah veelocitee cuwah fowah uhneemeea!"

Jarel-karn starts to have a feeling that his companion doesn't handle the situation the proper way, and prefer to add nothing to that, feeling that a fight could errupt in a few moments.

"My friends, calm yourselves!" says "Harold." "My dear sirs," he continues to the guards in the silkiest of tones, "I assure you that in your very justifiable anxiety for the safety of your citizens, you have entirely mistaken the situation! This--er--this 'lizard' is not a local; do you not see the gold cast to her scales? Such coloring is not present in the lizard folk here, is it? I thought not. No, indeed, she is from Daunton, as are we, and thus has never been exposed to this disease that you speak of--she has merely over-indulged in my good whiskey, as my friend stated, and her threats are owing to bit of a friendly quarrel. You must understand, she simply hates to lose at cards; says the most ugly things, you can't think! I'm sure you know the type. Please, we wish only to pass through your fine city and depart. I assure you there is no danger."

"He has a point, you know" says the half-elf guard thoughtfully. "I've never seen one of them with green-gold scales like that."

"Gold scales or not, what kind of drunk says things like that?" But despite the guard's insistence, Eithal's forceful demeanor causes him to take pause. He hesitates, not making any more sudden movements towards Toeto.

After a long pause, the woman says to his partner, "Hey, didn't the priest want to catch a live one?"

"What, Dieter? ... Right, he did." On hearing her reply, the scarred man sheathes his longsword.

"Maybe you newcomers haven't heard yet. The Poor Quarter has been put under quarantine, thanks to a plague running rampant inside. Your friend, she, is speaking madness just like the sickened do. And seeing as how the disease came from the lizards outside the city, you'll forgive us for being cautious. You'll need to take her to the Temple of Maros to get checked out."

"It's not far from the main gate. We'll show you the way."

OOC: Off to the temple then? The guards aren't going to leave you unescorted, not unless you want to try to get away from them.

Eithal gives the two a side-long glance, keeping her hand on the handle of her axe, but as Jarel-karn takes a diplomatic tone, she cautiously complies with the consensus of the group (whatever that will be), ready at a moments notice to respond to any threat.

With no strong objections, the party sets off with the guards for the temple. The relatively spacious dock district gives way to a set of narrow streets and buildings so tightly spaced that they may as well have been crushed into each other. You see several more soldiers of the Imperium walking in and out of the buildings, so you figure these may be barracks or have some other military-oriented function.

At one point, you pass a large, boarded up gateway on the right side of the street. Another pair of soldiers stand watch at this portal. Just as you walk by, a distant scream can be heard coming from somewhere on the other side of the gate.

The half-elf comments, "Poor souls. I wish we could do more for them, but we can't risk the plague spreading until the priests come up with a remedy."

After walking down a few more winding streets, you reach the Temple of Maros, a square fort with arrow slits on all sides. Like most of the other buildings in Cay Harbor, it looks like a military fortification (which isn't very surprising since Maros is the god of war). Your escort doesn't follow you inside as you open the heavy wooden doors.

Despite the martial exterior, the inside of the temple looks relatively normal. Several rows of pews lead up to a raised altar at the far end of the large room. Statues of soldiers with various weapons are placed in the corners. You see ramps on either side of the altar leading up to a second floor, on the same level as the arrow slits. Standing near the altar is a priest who wears a strange combination of chainmail armor with a red robe underneath.

He doesn't immediately notice you come in.

[sblock=Damen]While in the tavern, you strike up a quick friendship with a drunkard named Gil. He looks utterly destitute, wearing ragged clothes and apparently not having bathed in weeks. After you shell out a few coppers to buy him a drink, he goes off all about his tragic history and how his life is ruined.

Cay Harbor was founded many years ago as an outpost of the Imperium. It was meant to be the staging area for a full invasion of the Savage Lands, "for the glory of the Imperium!" It attracted the best soldiers and support personnel that the empire could muster. Gil was a young soldier at the time, ready to do his duty. But soon after the outpost was established, the Imperium ceased offensive operations in the vast majority of its armies. Not willing to recall the soldiers and lose the outpost entirely, the harbor was left with a small garrison and largely forgotten about.

As Gil continues, you learn that the city has had an extremely tough time surviving. Barbarian lizardfolk raid anything outside the city walls, and they even attack the city once in awhile. The garrison is lead by an able commander (the Commandant, as he calls her), but they can't protect people once they leave the city, so it's impossible to exploit any of the natural resources outside. The city has a very large poor population as a result, and more people leave on outgoing supply ships every year.

Gil eventually lapses into a crying fit, so you decide it's time to take your leave. When you go back to the dock, the party is already gone. However, you learn from a passing soldier that they were heading to the temple. (You can enter the temple just after they do).[/sblock]

Right after the door closes behind you, it opens again as Damen rejoins the group. This time, the priest hears the noise and looks up to face you.

OOC: I'm going to try to move things along faster so you can make with the killing.
