We had a 5.0 on June 23, 2010, and a 5.1 on May 17, 2013. I didn't feel a thing or, if I did, just thought it was a truck going by on the street. Hell, with the neighbours I had back then I might have just thought they were screwing with me again. They routinely made enough noise to shake the plates in my cupboards.

*In general, eastern US earthquakes are much deeper underground than the west coast ones, meaning that they're felt over a wider area but the effects are much less apparent.
Also, the general geology of the East Coast is very different from the West Coast. Equivalently rated quakes will be less damaging and felt over a wider area in the east.
