Into the Moral Darkness: OOC

Nonlethal Force

First Post
This is the OOC thread for the solo game Into the Moral Darkness.

Velmont,

Post your character here once you have finished it up. I'll let you have free reign (within reason ... your character is only level 3 after all!) on your background. Tell me what you think of this for an opening scene: {I'll flesh it out more once we start}

- - - - - - -

Your character had been sent be the Baron Eiden's royal court to investigate Jairal Oakshod, the half-elf mayor of Devil's Hand - a small suburb of Stalagmite.

[Sblock=If you choose Aster as race]Your character was to impersonate the Aster Rufus Harassha, otherwise known as the Voice of Geoffsonburg. The Voice of Geoffsonburg is a minor ambassador serving under King Sigfried of the Nation of Barghost. As an Aster, he claimed a name that was a decription of his work. Being an ambassador he took up the name "Voice" and originally he is from Geoffsonburg in Barghost.[/Sblock]

[Sblock=If you choose Human as race]Your character was to impersonate the human Stephen Orellius, a minor ambassador serving under King Sigfried of the Nation of Barghost.[/Sblock]

The job was botched horribly; although the fault did not belong to your character. Apparently Baron Eiden's court had a secret spy within it that tipped Jairal of your characters coming. A trap was laid and nearly succeeded.

Jairol's men gave no indeication that they knew of your character's disguise and infiltration. Your character was welcomed with all the pomp and circumstance that was relevant to the coming of an ambassador of a foreign country. Upon being shown to the proper quarters, your character barely escaped the four assassins that were hidden within the walls. Fortunately, your character's ability to bluff about the presence of several assistants in your entourage kept them at bay long enough for your character to make it to the door. Once your character escaped, his natural ability to hide kept the heat from closing in completely.

During your character's escape attempt, he was running down a servant's hallway in the mayor's mansion when he finds himself pulled off the ground and in the strong hands of a man dressed in a simple gray cloak. As your character wiggles in his grasp the man says, "Whoa, little one. You run down that hallway and you get caught. Follow me, and I'll get you out safe."

- - - - - - -

That is about where we'll begin the story. For your own sake and character development, OOCly speaking your character will shortly find himself near the border of Quehalost. Apparently there are two corrupt mayors in the suburb towns of Whistlestop and Goldcastle who have fallen into league with the Assassin's Guild in Cloaksville. [All of these cities can be found in Baron Dhast's land] His mission is use his skills to secretly infiltrate the communities, perhaps making a name for himself through <insert profession/craft/perform skill>. His mission is primarily to gather information first, although eventually (perhaps after a few levels and maybe a few other assignments) he might be able to go back and infiltrate the assassins themselves.

What that'll mean for you, then, is if this set-up is acceptable then in coming up with a background for your character you'll need to provide a plausible background that leads up your character's service as a minor spy in Baron Eidon's employment. You can explain as much or as little of your background as you want. Feel free to come up with the reasons for the various classes your character took as well as how he became noticed by Baron Eiden's men. In addition to this, you can go into as much greater detail as you would like. :)

EDIT:

Character creation is very simple. It is done by PHB standard method, with a few exceptions:

1. Hit Points are generated at 75% normal. Thus, at each level use the following:

d4 = 3 HP, d6 = 4.5 HP, d8 = 6 HP, d10 = 7.5 HP, d12 = 9 HP

In the case of decimal HP add them together and if you end up with a total that ends in a decimal simply drop the decimal. Thus, a rogue 2 would be 2d6 = (6+4.5) = 10.5 which would be rounded down to 10. However, you'll make it up the next level because a level 3 rogue would be 3d6 = (6+4.5+4.5) = 15. Make sense?

2. I do follow the Cross-Class restrictions on Skill Points. Thus, please make sure that you take your skill points appropriately because with 3 different classes you'll need to keep track of which skill are class skills at which level to make sure you add them up right.

4. Starting gold is as per the DMG p. 135. Thus, level 3 = 2,700. I don't have any particular rule that says that no more than a certain % of your gold can be in one item. You may spend money on anything in the PHB and DMG without asking permission. Stuff from non-CORE WotC books is typically also approved, but please ask first.

I think that should do it. Any other questions just ask!

Oh - for the sake of simplicity, can you use your first post here as a placeholder for your character sheet? Then you can start asking questions after that post. I don't mean to be anal about it ... but this way your character sheet will be easily seen and it's location easily remembered. Thanks!

Appearance: Veniel has as many appearance as he has identity. As Veniel, he is a Aster showing good health, and has a good frame without being muscular. He wears his long hiars with a pony tail attach with a small leather rope. He has no facial hairs. His outfit looks like some hunter's outfit, with many hidden pockets where he hide some small alchemical objects. He proudly show his father's dagger and always wear his mother's ring at his finger.

As the Alchemist of Mistrolla, he colors his hair with a darker brown coloration and wear it in a chignon. Two long whiskers fall down to his chin. His clothing are the one of an alchemist, simple but resistant, with leather gloves and apron while he is working to protect himself from the dangerous substances. His dagger is hidden under his clothing and his ring is worn at his neck, with a small chain, under his clothing. He stands more hunched and has smaller eyes, like an Aster who has spend too much time reading over his book.

Background:
-=-=-= Near the city of Mistrolla, 15 years ago =-=-=-

"Look my son, you see that deer? " tells the Aster to his son. His son is looking with large eyes. It is the first time his father bring him there. The little boy knew that the region wasn't very safe, the Ettin have been growing in strength, slowly, but now it wasn,t safe to walk outside the roads. "These creature are fearfull. At the first sound they hear, at the first movement they spot, the will turn there head, nervously, and if the doubt stay, they will flee. We will approach him to have a better sight at him." The father leads his son toward the deer. He move quietly, slowly. His son follow him, but all his attention where drawn on the animal. He hadn't seen the bee that was flying from flower to flower. When the young boy put his feet on the flower where the bee just land, the bee feeled attack, and replied. "Ouch!" shout the young boy. His father quickly took the boy and looked at the feet, but the boy saw the deer fleeing. "Are you all right, Veniel?" asked the father. "Yes father..." he told, a tear rolling on his cheek "I'm sorry, the deer is gone.". The father smiles at his son "You have to be more cautious, and look where you are putting your feet. It doesn't matter the deer flee today, but someday, it might be a question of life, so you'll have to learn that, and to control yourself too, and not shout for the sting of a bee, but that will come in time. Come on, we will go back and see your mother, by the time we will arrive, it will be time to eat." The father took his son in his arm and start to carry him back to town.

"Vaniel, what are you doing?" asks the woman to her son, with a voice that reprimand the boy. The young boy was playing in the room of his mother. She had been part of a performer troop before she married the Greyhound of Mistrolla, an Aster who was part of the Figther's Guild and was part of teh scout team, seeking Ettin's hideout to get rid of them. There number had continued to grow, and the women had left her performer's job, and her name of the Muse of Mistrolla, to join the group. Her skills to move silently behind teh scene not to disturb the play, to hide in the dark waiting for her turn to appear in the scene, and the natural obeservation qualities of her race would make it a nice support to more experienced scout, like the Greyhound of Mistrolla. She was also trained to fight, the only real talent lacking to her. She had become known has teh Shadow of Mistrolla, as she was good at hiding, but also because she was always following the Greyhound wherever he goes into mission.

The young boy loved to sneak into his parent's room and take the makeup kit that was in the locked chest of her mother to disguised into goblins or ettins and play with his friends. "I wanted to look like a dragon..." The woman smiles at his son. "Veniel, I told you to ask the permission first. And you look more like a lizard than a dragon. Here, let me help you." The boy jump at his mother neck, squeezing her. "You are putting green makeup on my shirt..." she tells, putting Veniel back on the floor. She took some water and washed his face and then start again, explaining what could help him... Veniel arrive late that day at the meeting with his friends, but he had the chance to scared them all with his menacing dragon makeup.

The dwarf was sitting on a stool too small for him. He knew the young Aster since he was high like a dwarf's boot. He had come to explain what happen, but at the first words, Veniel knew. He was crying. Each time his parents were gone, something in the bottom of his heart told him there was a risk, but his innocent mind didn't care much about that feeling, but now he understood it. They both died. How could that be possible? "I am sorry kids. I will be taking care of you for the moment, but I'll contact your uncle. He will be the one repsonsible of you from now on..." The dwarf hand him two objects. The first was dagger. That weapon have been to his father. One of the best you can find. His father was using both for his work than at home. He always had it at his side. The second item was a ring. Plain and mundane, that ring was his mother's ring. She had recieved it from her father, after a show. She put it and never removed it. It was one year before he was born. There was no doubt about the story, never Ardak would lied to him, and never his parent would have given these objects.

-=-=-= City of Mistrolla, 9 years ago =-=-=-

It has been three months since his parent's died. He was about to leave to Elk River, where his uncle would take care of him. But before leaving, he had to know what really happen. Ardak have never told all the story, only the great lines. Veniel, still living in Ardak's house, took advantage of his absence. He knew the dwarf always kept his door locked, but he hed more than once unlocked her mother's chest, why not Ardak doors. It took him more time, the lock was a good one, but he had all his time, Ardak wouldn't come back before the night, and generally very late. He finally open the door. The dwarf office was very simple. A desk one chair behind, two in front and a bookshelf. In the bookshelf, a small chest. He search the desk first, but only paper of inventory and other administrative paper. He decide to search the small chest. He open it without too much problem and found in it reports. A mole was hiding in the rank of the Figther's guild. All was pointing on Marcus, a man that had gain some ranks in the last years. His influence is minor in the organization, but it allow him to access information others wouldn't have, or at least not as quickly as him. The only problem was before acting against him, Ardak want to know for whom he is working, as it is not clear, and there is no reason he would work for the Ettin, these must be only a tool in a third hand.

Another report is about the ambush that cost the life of his parents. They were scouting ahead when the group was attacked. Being outnumbered, the figthers had to retreat, but the two scouts were cut. Pietro, the human leading the group, decide to retreat and gather elsewhere. The group scattered and could gathered. Many had small wonuds, but only one man fall in the fight, he was killed before anyone knew what was falling on them. Liomer, an elven archer, asked what they would do for the scouts, but Pietro tell they were on there own. Liomer argued, the scouts might still lived, the group could try to find them, or at least, to create a diversion. They were most likely surrounded. Pietro ordered to come back to the city. There Pietro made his report, and tell his commander that the scouts were among the fallen, so no rescue had been sent. As Veniel was reading these reports, he felt a mix of emotion in his heart. The pain of the lost of his parent, that wound wasn't closed yet, if it could ever close, and it was painfull to read. He was sad, but he felt an hatred. Marcus and Pietro was two humans, and they were showing two sides of these race. Humans was an impressive race, able of the greatest thing, but most of them were coward, more than the Aster, who were very cautious, but would help when they could. But even worst, they could be treacherous, they could turn against there own kind.

Veniel was with his uncle. The Huntmaster of Elk River was responsible to organize many hunt for the nobles of Fenneress. He has gained his title after many years of hunting. The old brother of the Greyhound of Mistrolla was showing that the hunt was in the vein of the family, the only difference was the prey. The Huntmaster didn't had teh same courage of his little brother, and had decided to stay in the safer region of Elk River, but that didn't played on his skills. He was the best tracker, and knew the animals better then themselves, so he could organize a hunt with only 12 hours in front of him, tracking an animal, moving him toward the field where the hunt will happen, make sure it won't run away until teh hunt has started. Now that he has an apprentice, he decided to show him his skills, in hope maybe he would take his place, but Veniel wasn't interested. He was listening, but more in repsect than by interest. "Do you understand what I am telling you?". The boy nods. "But do that apply to any creatures?" The uncle stares a moment at the kids. "If you think to track those Ettin and kill them, I prefer not to answer. Remove these idea of vengence, it is not good for your health." The boy nod and he never asked it again, or anything related. He had his answer anyway. It could be used for anyone, including the Aster, the elves, the dwarves or the humans... he would just need to put that into practice.

Veniel was now sixteen years old, and he was alone in the city. He was in a bar. He was doing one of his hobby. Shadowing a person until his target show some sign that he had been spotted. It was a weird habit he had devellop he thought, but interesting. He had spent a whole day following a single man one time. He had learn much more he would have expected about that man. In one day, he learned almost all the habits of the man, and for the remaining of the week, he could find that man in less than an hour. It wasn't hard, there was five place he was spending most of his time. At his stall where he was working, in his home, where he was sleeping. In a small park, where he liked to spend some time with his wife and kids and a tavern, where he spend some time with his friends. The last place, it took him a bit more time to understand what was happening, but he conclude that he had a relation with another woman. He didn't find it surprsing for a human. Treacherous. At a moment, he thought he should warn his wife, but he finally told himself it wasn't his repsonsability, and he wasn't sure it would have been a srvice to give to the wife and th kids. They were happy, even if they ignore one thing.

Today, he had all the day to himself, his uncle was spending the day to organize a hunt for a Baron in visit. Veniel had spotted a man in the morning. His curiosity was stir up when he saw that another man was tracking him. So he decide to take the challenge. The day was young, and he was wondering how much time he could track that man without being spot by his prey and the other predator. The man started to visit the market, then, he had spend some time in a small hostel who was selling food. During the afternoon, he followed the man at three different house, and they were all influent men of the city. He wondered who was this man. And his predator was still following. He seemed to do the same thing as him. But what interest could that man have into following the other one. He left the two at an hostel he guess the prey was lodging, so he returned to his uncle house.

The day after, it was the hunt. The baron arrive early. When Veniel looked at him, a doubt entered his mind. The hunt started, and Veniel was repsonsible to take care of the dogs, so he was following, and some times, preceding the group. the hunt was successfull and when the sun reach his zenith, the group of hunter was on there way back. "Huntmaster, your title is correctly use. You are quite a master in your domain. I'll come back." "Thank you, sir" "And I see the hunt is running in your family's blood." The baron stared a moment at Veniel. It is there it came back to him. The man he was tracking the day before was the Baron. And the baron seems to know it. Veniel started to be uneasy in his presence.

-=-=-= City of Stalagmite, 5 years ago =-=-=-

He couldn't concieve why he was here. A week earlier, he had recieved a letter from the Baron Eiden. He was telling how he had appreciate the hunt the year before and wanted his skills at his manor, where he liked to hunt. It was strange he refered to that day, as he had come two other times. His uncle had encouraged him to go see him. It was a chance. But his uncle didn't knew what happened the day before. He was now awaiting in a lerge room. Rich decoration, large painting, masterwork weapons and armors were decorating the room. Veniel was uneasy in such rich environment, in the house of a man he had spied. The butler entered the house. He ask Veniel to follow him. He neter a large room where all the wall were cover with bookshelves. A large window was ligthing the room. No candle anywere, most likely to prevent any fire. Two chairs was in teh middle of the room. It was the only furniture. The Baron was sitting in one of them. "Welcome to my lecture room. I like spend some time here. You can take a chair" The Baron wait for Veniel to sits down. the butler left. Veniel stayed silent, not sure what to do. "You are wondering why I have asked you to come here. I need a man like you. You are quite an hunter, and your skills will come handy. But you won't be tracking animals. I was thinking another kind of prey, one you seemed to like to hunt." The Baron smiled at him. Veniel was very uneasy in his large chair. "You have been quite skilled, but you should learn one thing, I am always watch over by at least two men." The message was clear. He had seen only one predator, the other most have spotted him and Veniel had been the prey. That would explain why he knew, he must has considered he wasn't a threat. "I would need you for an easy job, but one that need someone outside my castle. I suspect my butler to steal me some money. The amount are not large, but I need someone to track him and learn why he is doing that, so I can make the necessery so it doesn't worsen. But my butler knows everyone. He doesn't know you yet, and will not suspect you. He thinks you are here to recieve some order for my next hunt in Elk River. You'll be paid for the trouble, and if you find the answers to my questions, you'll be rewarded. And maybe, you'll have another hunt. Are you interested?" Veniel couldn't believed it. It was a great surprise. He nods.

He was in the laboratory, he was working on some poison. His master wanted to show him how to create one and how to prepare the antitoxin related to him. It has been two years now he was at his side. He had learn many things, how to prepare alchemical items, how to cast a few spells. He had focus on many spells of illusion and enchantment, as he knew they could come handy in the futur, but he wasn't here to learn, but to report the movement of his master. The Baron didn't trust the wizard. He never told what concerned him, he simply asked to report anything, but he was starting to understand. He wasn't doubting the way of teaching of his master, but the amount of poison he had to prepare would be enough to put all the stable into a coma... why such a large amount. He has always pretended to be naive, and hasn't asked any question to his master, but he knew that this wasn't simply to teach him how to make an antitoxin, he simply needed a fraction of that amount of poison. He will have to report it to the Baron Eiden.

Veniel was back to Elk River. After being the Alchemist of Mistrolla for his master for four years, he was back to his uncle side, he was again Veniel, but he was still teh Eye of Stalagmite, but few knew him under that name. The Alchemist of Mistrolla had lost his master. He had been killed. Officially, it was by bandits, but Veniel knew more. After reporting the strange command his master have been producing to unknown client for two years. The Baron had asked him to sabotage one production. He did as he was asked. It seems the client didn't like that. Veniel didn't expected such retribution. The client seems to be more important and powerfull than he was thinking. Is the Baron was aware of that when he asked to do the sabotage. He didn't knew, but there is one thing in life that he was sure, coincidence are rare and should never be considered...

A new letter. The Baron was asking him to come back to him. A new hunt. The last year has been relax. His uncle asked him many questions, he wanted to know what it was being the Hunter of Stalagmite. Poor uncle, it took him time, but he decide to make his uncle a confident. At least, if he had trouble, he would have one person to come to. His uncle didn't seemed surprise by the news. "I knew something like that would happen. You are more like your father. Animals are not a challenge, you need to have an opponent at your level, but you've chosen the terrain of your mother, the city. you hide among people like I hide among the trees. But be cautious, an animal never seeks vengeance, but your prey might. Just be cautious." "I am leaving again." "Fine, go and hunt. I will never ask you about your hunts, but if you need help, I'll be here."

Excelent. Take your time, though. No rush. I'd rather you come up with something that you are happy with than try to rush it.

Nice thing about a solo game is that it will go as fast/slow as you need it to. Nobody is waiting on you except me!

I was thinking that maybe I would take Craft(Alchemy) for my Profession/Craft/Perform skill. I wnat to knwo how people see these alchemist? Also, is it another skill that is needed to craft poison? It might be usefull at some point to

Another possibility would be to be a blacksmith, but also there, I was wondering. Does Craft(Blacksmith) cover the creation of metal weapon and metal armor?

Craft Alchemy would be an excellent choice. Alchemists are viewed anywhere on the spectrum from necessary workers (those who make antidotes and weapon upgrades) to absolute lunatics (those who are obsessed with crazy schemes like turning lead into gold or worse yet - those who long to make potions and oils that turn people into grave and horible things. Alot of it would depend on how the characte presents himself. If he presents himself as a normal person with a legitimate trade (like making antitoxins, sunrods, thunderstones, etc) people might find him fascinating. If he presents himself as dangerous (like making acid, alchemist's fire, and the like) then the general public might be more wary of him. Of course, just because he presents himself as making "neat" things doesn't mean he couldn't make more dangerous things (like acid or alchemist's fire) in private. Does that make sense? As for poisons, I'd let that fall completely under Craft(Alchemy). Note, however, that poison is always illegal as per the DMG. That doesn't mean the good guys don't use it in desperate situations occasionally. But they would seldom use it to kill. Incapacitate for arrest, possibly. But they would never get caught with it on their person.

Craft(Blacksmith) would cover any work with metal. You could make garden tools, plows, wagons, and even weapons/armor. However, it would only apply to metal.

Craft(Fletching) would allow you to make bows/arrows/crossbows/slings/etc.

Craft(Weaponsmith) would allow you to make all weapons regardless of the material.

Craft(Armorsmith) would allow you to make all armor regardless of material.

Craft (Leathersmith) would allow you to make anything you wanted that is typically made out of leather.

EDIT: Just in case you are curious, Studded Leather falls under Craft(Leathersmith) or even Craft(Armorsmith) not Craft(Blacksmith). Even though it is studded with metal it is a leather item.

Sheet looking good so far. A couple of points, though:

1. Using the Class Defense Bonus from UA would give you an armor bonus of +4, which is automatically better than your studded leather without spending any money on it. It would increase your AC by 1 and save you 175 gold. Just offering ... ;)

2. I'm not sure where you are getting the +14 from on your Disguise checks. I got a +2 from your synergy in Bluff. I also understand the +2 in the uses of the Disguise Kit. Am I missing something huge?

3. I'm assuming the +2 Misc Bonus under Craft Alchemy is for the Alchemist's Lab?

4. In my game I use psionic/magic transparency. Thus, I merge the skills Know(psionics) and Know(arc) into one big skill. I also merge spellcraft and psicraft into one big skill. For what it's worth, UMD also becomes a combination of UMP and UPD, too. You don't need to change anything - just recognize that your ranks in spellcraft also technically count as ranks in psicraft.

Like I said earlier - the sheet looks good. When you get it a bit more fleshed out we'll begin. No rush, though.

EDIT:

I just noticed something else. I'm getting different attack numbers than you.

MWK Dagger: +3 (+0 STR, +1 Small, +1 MWK, +1 BAB)
Sap: 2 (+0 STR, +1 Small, +1 BAB)
Thrown MWK dagger: +5 (+2 DEX, +1 Small, +1 MWK, +1 BAB)

Did you forget the MWK or the small bonus on your dagger numbers?

Oops, forgot about the Class Defense Bonus, in that case, I will not have any armors.

For the +14... I had a hat of disguise, but I choose not to take it, but forgot to remove the bonus...

And for the craft skill, yeap, it is from the lab the +2.

I'll correct it in a moment and work more on it this week-end.

Okay, great. See my edit in the above post, I think you shorted yourself in your attack numbers. Also, make sure you see my post in the homebrew section about the monetary gemstones. They make life much easier, especially on PbP threads.

I've completed his equipment. It has resulted into something I wasn't expecting... and I must tell I look at him and he seems a bit paranoid (which is not bad with his job). I've seperated the items per containers. You can assume I have my backpack, pouchs and scroll case on me most of the time. The horse stays at the house or in a stable near my house. The first chest is standing in obvious place, and have my mundane item. A second chest will be hidden (the one that is locked and trap :] ) and contain all that I need when it is time to pass into action. The Alchemist lab is most likely not all in the chest, and most of the items must lay in the laboratory room, but when I need to store things, they go into the chest (example, if I have to move into another city).

Most likely I will introduce me as an alchemist in the town. I'll be here to support the city with some items that might come handy. I will produce legal and normal items, and I will declare I can also make more dangerous items on command, but I ask questions and restrict it to specific client (like the rangers who want alchemist fire to fight some zombies on the other side of the border, if it happen). With time, if I need to join the assassin guild, I'll try to give the word that I would be ready to make command under the table, as long as it is discreet.

Also, I took a few items in the Complete Adventurer.

Looking good.

Couple of questions, though:

1. Where'd you get the info on the chest with an Amazing Lock?

2. Where'd you get the price for the Glyph of Warding trap on the chest? Glyph is a 3rd level spell, Blindness a 2nd. So it works out okay, just curious how you figured out the prices. If you did what I think you did ... 200 gp for the diamond dust + 150 for the spell cast by an NPC (5th level x30gp) that comes out to 350. I was wondering if you are not accustomed to charging for the additional spell - in this case blindness. Thoughts?

3. What book did you get the oil of taggit from? Just curious.

I did a quick search of CArc (for #1 & #3) and didn't see it, but I figured it was easier to ask than read the whole book again!

Anyway ... the rest looks pretty good. I'll over it more with a fine tooth comb a bit later. ;)
