This week from EN Publishing we have a new plug-in location in the Over the Next Hill series over on EN5ider, the 5th Edition Patreon, a look at how the legal system works in a fantasy medieval world filled with magic over on TRAILseeker, the Pathfinder Patreon, and a monster-creation system (and web app!) for GMs who need a little help creating NPCs and critters for the What's OLD is NEW system - along with an accompanying web app which does all the work for you!
Some great news for Greyhawk fans! Frank Mentzer, who designed the 1983 edition D&D Basic Set (known as the "Red Box") along with its sequels, co-wrote The Temple of Elemental Evil with Gary Gygax, and more, is to launch a Kickstarter soon for a 5th Edition and Red Box compatible region of a continent east of the well-known Greyhawk setting, known as the realm of Empyrea, a continent described in the adventure Egg of the Phoenix in 1987. He is working with Ted Fauster (World of Faerel), and is inviting famous artists of that era of D&D to join the project, such as Clyde Caldwell, Larry Elmore, and Erol Otus. He's doing this based on written permission from Gary Gygax dating back to 1981.
WotC's Dungeon Masters Guild store launched 18-months ago, and was a vehicle for D&D fans to produce material and sell it to other fans in one convenient online mega-store; WotC's version of the App Store, essentially. WotC's Chris Lindsay comments that the store now has thousands of new publishers on the store - something which is both bug and feature. One of the problems with such a large body of content is that it can be tough to find the really good stuff, and WotC has tried to address this is in past with columns highlighting certain products (and, indeed, there are websites which do that very well too, including the ENnie-nominated Loot the Room which posts a monthly Best of the DM's Guild column).
One thing people often hesitate over when it comes to the Virtual Tabletop versions of books they already own is that the electronic versions cost as much as the originals, and this can reduce the number of players using the platforms. Fantasy Grounds has recognised this, and has decided to take action by reducing the prices of Fantasy Grounds versions of books by up to 40%, depending on the book. That means something like the Dungeon Master's Guide or Volo's Guide to Monsters will go from $49.99 to $29.99.
This week's updates from EN Publishing include an article on EN5ider, the 5E Patreon, about variant humans for 5th Edition, making humans less the "default, average" race, and more varied with a range of alternative traits; on TRAILseeker, the Pathfinder Patreon, there's ten new transmutation spells; and the latest episode of Turn Order: Warped is here, as the Black Fang's intrepid crew prepare to rescue a hostage! And last, but by no means least, the release of The Nereid Trilogy, a sci-fi WOIN adventure by Jacob Rodgers.
Whether you play fantasy or sci-fi tabletop roleplaying games, Tabletop Money from EN Publishing presents you with a durable, inexpensive way to handle and exchange gold pieces, credits, and other types of coinage. These poker-sized cards come in various denominations and types. Choose from gold, copper, silver, and platinum pieces, or from credits and megacredits, for under $5 for a pack of 40, and mix and match packs as you need them. Suitable for a wide variety of games, including D&D, Pathfinder, What's OLD is NEW (WOIN), Traveller, Star Wars, and any other fantasy or science-fiction tabletop RPG which uses a currency system.
EN Publishing's latest updates include some storm-based adversaries for 5th Edition, the eight ZEITGEIST adventure for Pathfinder, rules for creating traps for WOIN, along with Episode 30 of Turn Order: Warped, entitled "Dave Wuz Here". Remember, the patreons are all "pay what you want" - simply pledge any amount per article, state a monthly maximum if you wish, and cancel at any time. You get access to the entire back catalogues immediately.
New over on EN5ider, the 5th Edition Patreon (which is pay-what-you-want, by the way!), is a brand new character race for 5E players! Immortal nature spirits, Nymphs have three subraces - Earth Nymphs, Forest Nymphs, and Water Nymphs. Also included are two new feats available only to these races, as well as information on Nymphs' place in the world, responsibilities to nature, families, and names. By Josh Gentry; illustrated by Tamara Cvetkovic.
ICv2 has released its latest survey of Top 5 hobby channel tabletop roleplaying games for the Spring 2017 period. The results are largely similar to previous periods, with D&D, Pathfinder, and Star Wars taking the top three spots as they have since 2014. Shadowrun has dropped from #4 to #5 due to the newly ranking Adventures in Middle Earth from Cubicle 7 (itself, of course, actually a setting book for D&D 5th Edition rather than a full game).
The long-awaited first part of the critically acclaimed adventure path is here, and available exclusively on EN5ider, the 5th Edition Patreon! In factories throughout the city of Flint, months of ceasless toil by mages, engineers, and shipbuilders have finally concluded. Now well-wishers from across the nation of Risur have come to witness the launch of the world’s mightiest vessel of war: the R.N.S. Coaltongue, impervious to spell and cannon and armed with fire that could slay even a dragon. On the docks, constables keep a close eye on celebrants and troublemakers; in the shadows, conspiracy and betrayal threaten this technological titan on its maiden voyage. Meanwhile, on an island in the lush Yerasol Achipelago, enemy spies put their plans into motion, clouded with secrecy...
Turn Order: Warped, the official stream of the WOIN roleplaying game system, is back with a new episode! "The crew of the Black Fang meets with Felix's contact, Kip Bunnagin to learn more about a high-paying bounty." Join GM of Doom "wacksteven" and the crew of the Black Fang in their intrepid science-fiction adventures! As always, you can get video or audio version of the show - simply subscribe to the YouTube channel or to the official podcast! Or, of course, you can watch the show live on Twitch as it goes out every Saturday! Note that the show features adult language.
Industry stats are a bit like buses - you wait ages for one, and then two come along at once. I covered Fantasy Grounds' latest stats a few days ago, and now Roll20 has weighed in. The two data sets usually line up reasonably well at the top end (taking players as the metric, both give 62% to D&D 5E, although Fantasy Grounds has the next highest at Pathfinder with 11%, while Roll20 reports nearly 20%). In third place, Fantasy Grounds features Savage Worlds, but that system is #14 on Roll20. For Roll20, as well as Fantasy Grounds, D&D's lead increased slightly over the last quarter. Interestingly, World of Darkness is now above D&D 4E for the first time.
The pre-order for the Tal'Dorei Campaign Guide, the D&D 5th Edition campaign setting book written by Matthew Mercer and James Haeck, published by Green Ronin, and based on Geek & Sundry's popular Critical Role web-series, was launched a few days ago (with overwhelmingly popular success, I'm told). It's a full-colour hardback book, 144-pages in length. James Haeck was happy to answer a few questions about the book, and about working with Matt Mercer, and Green Ronin was kind enough to send along a couple of gorgeous previews, which you can see below.
I (as in EN World) will be sponsoring a brand new tabletop roleplaying games club right here in the heart of sunny Southampton, UK. The club opens this evening for the first time (Wednesday, July 19th) at 6pm and will run every Wednesday evening. If you're in the Southampton area and are looking to join a new game, this is an ideal opportunity. There will be games of all stripes, from D&D to to the latest indie games.
I've just received the latest usage statistics from the good folks over at the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop showing which game systems are being played on their system. The last set of stats from Fantasy Grounds were back in January, covering up to Q4 2106. This latest set runs through June 2017. So, what's changed? Not a lot as it happens. D&D 5E's share has increased from 58% to 62%, Pathfinder has drooped to 11%, Savage Worlds has increased to 7%, and D&D 3.5 has dropped from 6% to 4%, leaving Other Games to drop from 17% to 16%.
It's time to vote in the 2017 Gen Con EN World RPG Awards! The voting booth is now open. You can vote on one, some, or all of the categories, selecting from the presented nominees. For more information on the nominees, click here. The voting booth will remain open for ten days, closing on July 21st. The ENnies Award Winners will be announced live at Gen Con on Friday, August 18th in an awards ceremony hosted by Stacy Dellorfano.
