Player's Strategy Guide

On a cursory scan of this forum I haven't noticed any threads about this book. What's the deal? How is it? I have very little to no interest in it except that I'm curious as to what it is (and how they managed to get a 160-page product out of it).

Pray tell.

I have a copy. It is a guide to D&D for new players. It covers a lot about characters and the many options that are out there. It is better I think then D&D for dummies but it does have a different focus and has more gaming material to draw upon.

If you see it in a store flip through and read some of the side bars were people talk about their characters. It is mostly WotC personel but has a few other people did them as well. They are mostly entertaining and fun to read.

I flipped through a friend's copy. It was very entertaining (especially the artwork), but not the sort of thing I'd buy if on a budget (as I am these days).

I'm eagerly awaiting my contributor's copies so I can give one to the soon-to-be-11-year-old whose family won the D&D birthday party I donated to my son's school auction. If my own "must play Advanced D&D because who wants to be Basic" attitude at this age is any indication, these are not kids who will be eager to be seen as Dummies, but a Strategy Guide is serious-sounding enough that it should be embraced, and my guess (since these guys weren't even aware of the Character Builder demo) is that it will be a real help.

A thread at the Wizards boards came up while I was procrastinating at work, so I pasted links to & quotes from the reviews I know about:

DM Samuel has the most comprehensive rundown of the book's contents. He concludes: "This book gives a pretty simple depiction of how to maximize the use of your PC and build it to be effective in the first place. I don’t think the target audience includes me, a DM that has been playing and DMing for more than 20 years, so I may be taking a harsher view of the book than a newer player. This tome is written in simplistic terms for a new player. The tactics are not laid out in a great deal of depth and most of the advice amounts to things that a long-time RPGer would consider basic. To a newer player these things may not be common sense, so I’m not sure that this is a bad thing, actually."

Dragon Avenue says "This is a fantastic addition to the supplements in D&D. The “For Dummies” brand came out with their “Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition For Dummies” book, but Wizards laid it all out on the table with this, taking every single little detail into consideration when it comes to creating life on paper that becomes a Player Character in D&D. Some people like to just roll dice, level up, and collect items where some people like to create a believable scene for D&D. This book definitely covers all of that."

Pornokitsch says "In The Forest Of Mathematical Perfection, it's easy to lose sight of The Castle Of Awesome Fun. And, for all that this new book is full of tips and tricks to build the best character, it keeps signposting the road back to that Castle."

A lot of the art is by the Penny Arcade guys, and I think that's a great thing. They've been instrumental in introducing a lot of new players to the game.

One of my friends has this and says it's really good. I think I'd recommend it for anyone who has been playing for less than a year or two.
