Well, since what we've seen so far is a mere fraction of information from two 100+ page books (one of which hasn't even been released anywhere), I find any judgments to be completely unsound.

If thats the case, wouldnt your defense of it as "story advancement" judgement be just as unsound?

You cant have it both ways....any naysaying is unsound while its defense is not.....

Once again, its exactly like starship troopers. Great on its own. Poor when its hanging itself on the FR legacy and history.

...to you.

To me, it appears that the Forgotten Realms could be interesting property for the first time in it's existence, especially since they got rid of lame Earth parallels like Maztica.

Uh, no, because it IS story advancement. If Fzoul Chembryl is a mortal in 1385 and an Exarch in 1479, that is story advancement, not retconning.

You: Despite having not read the new Forgotten Realms book, and basing my judgement solely on slivers of information from one of the two books, I have come to the conclusion that it is total crap and any justification for any changes is likewise crap. It's all been retconned.

Me: You're using that word wrong. Retconning doesn't apply to everything they did to the Realms. And it's a bit premature to make a final judgment when half of the setting (the PG) isn't out, and you haven't even personally seen the CG.

You're awfully quick to draw lines and assign me to a particular side, when in fact, I haven't posted any kind of defense of the new material in this thread. I don't make blanket statements about material I haven't read, like "it's the worst/best thing ever." That's just foolish.

Uhm, no, you did make judgemnts on the new material. Hell in this post alone:

"Addition."

Unlike you, I'm not upset about a new edition of a product, with timeline advancements, actually being different or including new stuff.

You just did. Twice. So come off your high horse, of not making judgements. You have, and did.

As stated twice, now three times.

Its intersesting...I'll probably mine it for my own games. It would be a hell of alot better if it was its own stand alone instead of the new Forgotten realms. Its the similar thing as starship troopers. Better on its own if it wasnt based on something.

Built from the ground up as its own new world? Great. Fast folwarded 100 years and shoehorning new material into old setting? Not so good.

You have trouble with definitions, as well as with constantly shifting what you're attributing to me (first I was "defending" the material, and now I'm "making judgments" on it).

Passing judgment would indicate I gave an opinion or an evaluation on the material, which I have not. It could be good. It could be bad. I won't know until I read it.

Pointing out that you're misusing words (like retcon) to refer to any and all changes is not a judgment on the material.

Pointing out that advancement in a setting timeline producing changes is story advancement, not a retcon, is not a judgment on the material.

Wow. Looks like alot more "wonk" as far as setting changes, just like the TOT, if not worse.

FR 1E was well done, completely useable, and didn't have all the silly baggage. That old grey box is pretty edition neutral as well as there is not much in the way of stats. If I get tired of tinkering and working with the Nentir Vale setting over time, I'll just drag the OGB back out.

I get a sense of deja vu, here. I remember you liking something else for the very first time in it's existence that also just happened to be being overhauled for 4E as well. I can't recall what it was.
