Anyone got an opinion on Fable 2 yet?

I'm looking for something that my wife and I can play together, so when I saw that Fable 2 had offline co-op, I got excited. We used to play Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and its sequel, but those got old eventually...

It's getting generally favorable reviews overall. I just ordered it. Never played the first one.

Just an FYI, it appears that the co-op requires the second player to play as a henchman, rather than bringing his/her own unique character into the game.

I'm really, really liking it so far. My axe-swinging wizard owns a vegetable stand and does some blacksmithing on the side when he's not busy being awesome.

My evil character, on the other hand, starts off his day by killing everyone in the local gypsy camp. I wonder if it'll be as easy to empty out the larger cities...

Pros:
- The dog is pleasant. Nice to find treasure all over the place. He's easy to connect with, considering your character is a mute anyways.
- Combat is fun and well done.
- Easy death penalty. You just respawn with a scar. Really, for a huge game like this, I don't need a big death penalty to add 20 hours of play time. Just let me play already.
- Huge variety of stuff to do.
- Good voice acting.
- Good story so far...

Cons (mostly minor):
- I wish they'd just let the main character talk. Seriously. The expressions mechanic is an annoying flaw in the game.
- I'm interested in the family mechanics, but the only interesting female character in the game, I can't seem to actually interact with... Annoying. So, I guess I'm just supposed to pick a random villager by first name (because they pretty much look alike)? And even if I could interact, it'd be: Heroic Pose! Dance! Trophy! Maybe as I progress there will be other characters I can interact with though...
- Random quests in my log when I've never even heard of them? That's just stupid. At least let me find the quests.

Huh?:
- Don't really understand all of the magic powers fully yet. It seems like the powers are: you can shoot fireballs or you can do less powerful stuff. I need to try the other powers out more though.

Agreed. It's a little wonky and I don't expect it to improve over time. After Mass Effect, this seems like a downgrade. I imagine they'll fix it up for Fable III. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I loved Mass Effect. The depth of story there seems much deeper than it is in Fable 2. But the ability to play in the sandbox and do your own thing seems higher in Fable 2.

Somehow, the game manages to give more sandbox options than Oblivion and yet still remain more accessible. Maybe it's just the breadcrumb trail (which I'm actually learning to like a lot).

Over lunch, my wizard took up some bartending in full archmage regalia. Then, after deciding that was pretty boring, got a shiny new blunderbuss and put the hurt on some bandits. He probably should have invested his money in something more profitable than fancy wizard clothes, since the vegetable stand is not earning a lot (especially after he marked everything down 20%), but at least he's getting cheap tofu out of the deal.

You can play save two separate games? I recall the save option automatically saving over your last save.

Played it for an evening. I think the lack of a death penalty is kind of lame, as it basically means I'm playing in God mode with no consequence for failure--and thus, no real sense of accomplishment for outstanding success, since victory's inevitable. The game doesn't even roll back, you just pick right up in the fight where you left off.

Still, it seems like sufficient fun that I will purchase the copy Gamefly sent me. The co-op feature sounds disappointing though. Guess I'll stick with Saints Row 2 for that.
