Anyone got an opinion on Fable 2 yet?

You can play save two separate games? I recall the save option automatically saving over your last save.

Played it for an evening. I think the lack of a death penalty is kind of lame, as it basically means I'm playing in God mode with no consequence for failure--and thus, no real sense of accomplishment for outstanding success, since victory's inevitable. The game doesn't even roll back, you just pick right up in the fight where you left off.

Still, it seems like sufficient fun that I will purchase the copy Gamefly sent me. The co-op feature sounds disappointing though. Guess I'll stick with Saints Row 2 for that.

Yeah, I was worried about that too. When I started my second game I was like: "They couldn't possibly be that stupid. Could they?" So I gave it a shot. And now when I start a game, I pick from amongst some tarot cards to decide which hero to start with (and no, I don't mean the male/female cards... you can have multiple save slots for different heroes).
 

Bought Fable 2 on Saturday, been playing frequently since then, both single player and co-op with my wife. We're having a pretty good time so far, even though we come from different backgrounds. I have a bit of CRPG (through all the consoles, all the way back to Zelda, and older computer games (Wizardry, Ultima, original Elder Scrolls,etc)) and RPG experience (2E DM when younger, 3E/4E/RIFTS casual reader) and she has very little of either (maybe some old 8-bit Final Fantasy once upon a time and some Heroquest boardgame). Here are my pros and cons, framed up around Simplicity's.

Pros:
- Totally digging the dog (ha!). Haven't found it irritating or intrusive.
- Combat IS fun and well done. It's real time, but I enjoy it even though I prefer Wizardry style rounds (shout out to my fave Bane of the Cosmic Forge). My wife's no video gaming champion and she seems to do just fine (big sigh of relief).
- Death penalty is relatively meaningless, depending on how you play, and we haven't found it intrusive at all.
- Definitely huge variety of stuff to do. My wife's obsessed with buying different outfits, houses, getting married, winning favors from villagers, etc. It seemed mindless and redundant to me until I thought about how I used to spend hours and hours killing slimes in Nintendo's Dragon Warrior series.
- Lots of voice acting, world feels alive but not too crowded.
- Definitely enjoying the story, but don't feel overly compelled to pursue it urgently. Lots of sidequests for good or evil characters.
- Great visuals. We find ourselves just enjoying "the view" sometimes.
- Perspective works great so far. Single player perspective options are typical, with either FPS or 3rd person view (Oblivion style). Haven't had any trouble with botched camera angles in co-op play.

Cons (mostly minor):
- The mute hero bit isn't a big deal to us. What if I didn't like the voice actor they chose? The expression system has worked fine so far. No Mass Effect experience though, so maybe playing that would change my opinion.
- Maps are small and hard to use, but the breadcrumb trail (cooler than I thought) and fast travel sort of negate their relevance a bit, I suppose.
- In co-op, only the primary character has a customized/customizeable appearance. The henchman (usually me, just like in real life) has to choose from a few preset visual and weapon options. Fortunately, the henchman DOES have the experience level (high magic, low strength, whatever) of the imported character (if not the appearance or gear) and can accumulate gold and experience (as set by the primary character). Being unable to import my character's look is probably the most disappointing aspect of the experience so far.
- I keep wanting to find a dig treasure that's actually interesting. Enough orange dye.
