Death Saves Out of Combat?

Well, in the situation where I came across this problem 3/4 players were down. It was truly a miracle the group didn't wipe, a miraculous 20 on a death save returning the paladin long enough to take out the big bad guy then fall unconscious again from another enemy, that enemy then taken out by the terrified lone wizard/cleric.

I guess I made the decision for the pace and experience's sake. And I would so again, and will, in what i suppose is my house rule or interpretation of this afterexperience.

I think it's a waste of time, effort and energy to roll outside of combat for a character's death.

I just allow them to automatically be stabilised. Dying outside of combat is sucky and unfun.

Even if you simply *have* to do it because the book doesn't say otherwise, then consider that a DC 15 is not a huge challenge when the person in the party with the highest bonus is going to roll and be assisted by up to four others. On average, they're not even going to have to roll to succeed on the stabilisation check.

If any character has the Heal skill and 10 Wisdom, they can take 10 on Heal checks to stabilize outside combat.

Only from 10th level. At 1st, a character with 10 Wisdom taking 10 on a Heal check will have a check result of 10. That's enough to trigger a character's Second Wind, if it's available, but they need to make DC 15 to stabilise an ally.

I assume DracoSuave meant "trained" when he said "has the Heal skill." So you can take 10 with it at 1st.
