Game Wikis?

Who uses 'em? Which ones work and why, please? Do you host your own, or get them from somewhere else?

Primarily interested in free, or low monthly cost services. Not looking to start one right away, but gathering data. Thanks in advance for all the info!

I have used them a number of times.

I usually just grab MediaWiki and host it myself on whatever domain I am not using (I have a ton of domain names).

Hosting is very cheap, so you should consider going that route and have full control over everything - anything you don't know how to do with a wiki, there will be a tutorial for online somewhere.

;)

this site has a wiki. It's free.

I've considered it, as it's a buttload easier to maintain and upload then the old fashion web sites.

However, the open nature bothers me. Most free ones expect that anybody can modify your wiki. That means vandals can come in, or folks who think they're enhancing your shared game world, when in reality, they're changing it on you.

What do you plan to put on the wiki?

I usually put player-level campaign information. World maps, documents that the PCs or players would know. Saves having to print it out, and they can get it anytime they feel like.

This seems to come up rather often at the moment...

I just set up a wiki at wikidot.com, customizable wiki, option to integrate a forum, everything I need :)

I use Obsidian Portal. I was using Media Wiki for a while, and managed to keep it hidden so that not just anybody would come across it and make changes, but it wasn't ideal for RPG playing. (Plus, the server it was on got hit by several injection attacks, screwing up Media Wiki each time.)

I'm much preferring Obsidian Portal nowadays, though it's by no means perfect.

I agree. I kept my own Wiki for a bit but Obsidian Portal is a great deal easier although limited. The Wiki markup is limited but good enough. I've found a few workarounds that make it fairly ideal for me.

You can check out my latest Campaign: The Girl in Glass. We just got started a couple of weeks ago for an example.

I guess I am not sure what the OP wants. A wiki for play live games or a place to hold information?

I use pbwiki.com for my own game (My campaign wiki) but it is for information and session stuff, not a place we use when playing. It's a place to put information for or from the DM. My players will occasionally put character thoughts out there as well.

It's free and I have had great luck with it.

Indeed it does: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/267774-where-create-wiki.html

Another vote for Wikidot, though I haven't really done much with it, just a placeholder page really: ~ Scroll of Alabar ~: Welcome to the Empire of Alabar

One thing I like is the inclusion of forums per wiki.

(The links in my sig are to TiddlyWikis, not true wikis, but single html files that are "wiki-like". They have their uses.)
