STARGATE UNIVERSE # 18:Subversion /Season 1/2010

Hmm... this seems to be turning out a little too pat for SGU. I think they're gonna do the right thing, but they could take the easy way out. :erm:

Clicky for my theory:
[sblock]First off, assuming Rush's dream is an accurate memory, he and Young ignored the fact that while Rush saw Telford's face in a reflection, he really doesn't know whose memories he was seeing! Many folks from Destiny have used Telford's body over the last couple months; someone else on "shore leave" could have contacted the Alliance...

Now, maybe Young and Telford cooked up something before O'Neill came onboard, and Telford's confession (which seemed a bit hammy and melodramatic to me) and suffocation was staged to draw out the real mole. Brody didn't really hesitate about the life support, did he? ;) Of course my money's on the most unlikely and shocking candidate: Eli! :D

Plus, from a writing standpoint, I get the sense there's some unresolved tension and drama from having Telford around in the future as a foil/thorn to Young.[/sblock]
I dunno... I may be wrong and may just be wishing for something a bit more "meaty" than what we got. It's still a very good show and I look forward to watching this season resolve (in 2 weeks, darn it! :( ).

I'll be playing boardgames tonight so I'll cross my fingers the Lucian Alliance is not involved.

Prepare for serious disappointment.

Some quick thoughts before bed -

I'm really sick of Wray's shrill yelling. About halfway in, I couldn't believe they wouldn't break Rush's connection. RDA still looks terribly old. Young has long left ethics and morality behind. The Stargate is a serious choke point; very easy to defend. This all seems like a giant rehash of when Atlantis got invaded at the end of the first season (IIRC) of SGA.

Overall, not a terrible episode though.

I managed to get home to watch the very last moments and see the teaser for next week.

I suppose I must finally accept the Lucians are involved.

Well, the Lucian Alliance might be involved, but I think it was fairly interesting. While they are a bunch of smugglers, thieves and thugs, they are also more than that.

Telford explained it nicely, I think. Earth did free the galaxy of a terrible regime - but then it just left them there.
Something was bound to happen to fill the vacuum and try to get some order back.

The guy that was giving Rush food (haven't we seen him before on Stargate?), he seemed to be a little above just a mere thug - he also seemed to be in it for the sense of wonder and exploration - the same ideals that drive our own exploration of the stars.

I think the meaty parts would be more about the role and purpose of the Lucian Alliance, as described above. At least that's more interesting to me as a twist in who's the real traitor.

It's a TV show, so they won't show everyone in vacc suits (because it would be too expensive, and too hard to tell who's who), but they have all been fighting in space for years, so I'd think any invasion of any starship would be done by suited crew. If they aren't suited up, either everyone in the universe is stupid (possible -- it is TV ;) ), or it's a convenience for the medium.

The question they didn't answer is whether or not Telford was brainwashed. Is there any way for them to even tell?

With his final admission and sneer (his diatribe about control of the SG and the arrogance of Earth's humans) he seemed to be making it clear he was fully in control of his actions and thoughts.

Yeah, but wouldn't he say that if he were thoroughly brainwashed, too?

I haven't seen (or don't remember) the previous shows that dealt with the brainwashing tech in question (Goa'uld, IIRC?), so I'm not sure how it works or what it's capable of (besides that Jack was apparently subjected to it at some point). So maybe you can stress someone out of it or break it, or it's not that thorough.

My Stargate Fu is sadly weak -- I didn't watch it regularly after the first couple of seasons, so many nuances are beyond me. One of these years, I'm going to have to spring for the DVDs or hit Netflix and watch 'em all.
