STARGATE UNIVERSE # 18:Subversion /Season 1/2010

...
The guy that was giving Rush food (haven't we seen him before on Stargate?), he seemed to be a little above just a mere thug - he also seemed to be in it for the sense of wonder and exploration - the same ideals that drive our own exploration of the stars.
....

I thought the same thing when I first saw that dude. I think they even lingered on his face when he was first shown. Pretty sure he's more than a thug.

Overall, few surprises, but a relatively solid episode. My one major disappointment was using Dr. Jackson as a field surveillance agent.

I'm really sick of Wray's shrill yelling.

Yeah, the more she gripes, the less competent she seems. She's out of her depth and beyond her core competencies. Shouting seems to be her last- ineffectual- resort. (Actually, she reminds me a LOT of some of my local politicians.)

About halfway in, I couldn't believe they wouldn't break Rush's connection.

I buy it...they're trying to nab some big and elusive fish.

I'm surprised that Rush lasted as long as he did before breaking, though.

Young has long left ethics and morality behind.

I can't agree with you there.

I think you're right- he showed up stealthily monitoring the interrogation...waaaaaaay in the background.

And unless I miss my guess, he's the same actor who is being splashed all over the 24 finale clips as one of the major bad dudes. Its rare for someone who is so prominent in one series to do a minor cameo in another.

Actor's name is Mike Dopud, and his character in SGU is listed as Varro at IMDB. Dopud has a lot of screen time in the scifi genre, he's been on a bunch of movies and shows, including Battlestar Galactica. He's in at least six episodes of SGU (leading up to the season finale, and the beginning of season 2), including this one. He's also been on both SG1 and SGA, but has played three entirely different characters, Varro will be his fourth SG role. So, the actor is not new, but the character is.

IMDB is your friend! :)

Well, the Lucian Alliance might be involved, but I think it was fairly interesting. While they are a bunch of smugglers, thieves and thugs, they are also more than that.

Telford explained it nicely, I think. Earth did free the galaxy of a terrible regime - but then it just left them there.
Something was bound to happen to fill the vacuum and try to get some order back.

I wonder too if it's a comment or parallel on America's role in current geopolitics.

If the Lucian Alliance knows so much about Destiney I don't know why they would want it.

As others said, power and the like. Probably they think they can just seize control of it and fly it back to the Milky Way.

I thought it was the same character from SG-1 actually. That guy was a bounty hunter trying to collect bounties for the Lucian Alliance so I thought it was just character recycling.

Was he one of the Yeehaw-Boys on BSG?

Yes, I think that's the role I remember him in.

The only reason the Earthlings didn't have supplies was that the Icarus planet exploded, and that was due to the LA attack, not the dialing of the 9 chevron address.

If they have a more stable planet, and it isn't under attack, they could potentially send regular supplies through.

I think it more likely that the Earth-side stories in the second season might involve seizing that planet. It might not get the Destiny crew home, but it would give them a better chance of survival.

If they want to be able to dial back home after getting to Destiny, all they really need to send through is a couple of ZPMs plus the equipment to hook them up. Properly boosted with supplementary power and after a fresh drink of star-juice, Destiny would have enough power to dial back.

If that were true, why did they have needed the Icarus planet to meet power requirements in the first place? Aside from that, I don't recall the SGC having the capability to produce ZPMs from scratch as of yet.

In fact, the Destiny seems to have a great deal of power (even if its maximum reserves are less than they should be), but they can still only dial local gates instead of galaxy-wide. Even if they have enough power to dial Earth, the Destiny's gate may simply not be able to do so.
