We had really good success with a Mystic Theurge for that. As a mix of two spellcasting classes, he has nearly twice as many spell slots to use per day, so he can afford to spend a lot of them on pre-combat buffs. He has lower total caster level (unless you take Practiced Spellcaster twice), so his direct attack spells are less effective, but battlefield control still works well.

Our MT used the standard cleric/wizard base. I'm told it also works well for cleric/bard, which grants bardic music and also allows some armor use.

Divine Ward is a nice feat to take for the MT as well, using your turn attempts to make touch spells affect close range targets.

There is also a spell in Dragon 280 called Familiar's Touch, which lets you charge your familiar with touch spells even if you aren't in contact. It lasts 1 min/level and targets the familiar.

I'll second the motion on the mystic theurge. Lots and lots of spells - multiple lower level buff spells are often better than higher level ones. A good twist is to use the archivist (from Heroes of Horror) instead of the cleric as the Dark Knowledge ability is skill based (and therefore works well even when multiclassing) and can give a small boost to the party as well.

Another interesting twist on the multi-classed caster theme, if you're using a less than good aligned party is the true necromancer (from Libris Mortis). With undead minions to do your bidding, you can buff them in addition to your allies.

The Combat Medic (Heroes of Battle I think) has a nice ability to provide a kicker effect for healing spells.

If I were going to play something that was useful as a healer / buffer, I would probably go with a wizard or sorcerer that worshipped a god of healing and took the arcane disciple feat. That would allow you access to the healing domain spells.

Then not only could you heal, but you could cast some very useful spells that would assist the party. Grease is great for making monsters flat footed. Glitterdust is always a fun spell. Haste and Greater Magic Weapon are your friends when it comes to buffing. I think it would give you a fun character to play and still be able to buff and heal.
