PE: Assassin Spoilers

This is a playtest version, so conceivably if enough people complain about the dual power sources, then it could still be changed.

Power source doesn't matter to me, it has no mechanical meaning and even the fluff importance has gotten diluted. The early power sources - Martial, Divine, Arcane - made sense to me fluffwise, but then they introduce "primal" and "shadow" and what have you. Primal and shadow don't really seem all that distinct from divine and arcane respectively, to me.

Funky. To me they are very different feels and I really like the concept of the power sources. I do think there's more room for building out mechanical distinctions to reinforce the differences between the power sources, however. To me, psionic is the only one that's got heavy mechanical support for distinction. Sure, the other sources have a few feats here and there, but I think there's a lot more you can do. And actually, I think we'll see some of that in Essentials.

I have to agree with tyrlaan that there are noticeable differences in the theme of each power source. Divine powers are typically radiant, sometimes thunder or fire, and have a heavy leader component regardless of class role. Arcane powers have a strong controller component. Shadow powers (at least the ones that we've seen so far) are often illusion, fear, or poison based. Primal is perhaps the most nebulous, aside from using "elemental" damage sources (plus psychic for the shaman).

So is it another Martial Striker? Is it ranged or melee and why on earth is it using a blow gun?

This raises into question other classes being essentialised that could switch power source... like the Hunter and Hexblade.

Edit: since this is the post-Essentials version, does that make it the "Essassin"?
How about "Essentien" or "Essenssin"?

This is in fact going to blow all of your minds:

It is shadow AND martial. It's a dual power source class. Reading it now, it's actually looking fantastic and I have to admit, this is a solid A+ effort. Far better than the original assassin.

The Assassin killed the WotC web site!

It's down now. I imagine it's probably them doing late night maintenance. Poor sleepy gerbils.

Just quick read it....very interesting. It has that old school essentials flavor, with the killing power that may get itself some revisions in november (they mention this is essentially a playtest version). I will play one if I can!

Can't help but keep comparing this to the Slayer. I feel like I'm in the Spartan vs Ninja episode of DW. The ninja might do a lot of cool stuff, but I think when it actually comes down to deadliness, the spartan is going to win. But I haven't read the whole thing yet, still reading...

Semi spell user! :)

(What, are there no other old Rolemaster players out there? :) )

Remember my Dabbler fondly...
