Even Newer(er) Tavern Thread: The Hanged Man

"This is my humble petition to any of you--to all of you. Please, aid me in this. . . for love."
Goldenhorn, who is just about to try his hand, or throat, at "king of the cup" as Mallaby enters, puts down his mug and stands up, gold ornaments clinking.

"Greetings to you, Lord Mallaby," he intones, "and to you also, stranger." (He appears to mean Eraden, who has just come over to the table to join the drinking.) "I am Ingvar Goldenhorn, son of King Dalfred the Fourth of Heaven's Eye, of the line of Asterion the First. My ancestors' worthy and noble accomplishments are too many and too great for my simple tongue to do justice to; yet the deeds of one most execrable villain, my great-great-great uncle Hvitserk, Devourer of the Human Hordes, are a most regrettable stain on my family's reputation. I will not allow the wickedness of one to overshadow honor of many. If your cause is a worthy one, then you may be assured that the danger is of no significance to me: I undertake it gladly in the name of King Dalfred and Asterion the First!"

Perin watched from the upstairs landing as the Noble entered, eventually, and listened to his appeal. He walked down the stiars and grasped the nobles hands in his own, locking eyes with him. "You'll reach your love before the time is up, don't worry." Letting go of the noble he stood back, "Names Perinithius, you can just call me Perin though."

Eraden turns to listen to Adelin's request. Finally someone seeking not a thief or mage, but a true protector. He sets his shield on his back as he stands to greet the man and watch as a few others do the same.

"Well met Lord Mallaby." The half-elf greets as he bows his head. "I am Eraden, Paladin of Palladys and an excellent escort." He says as he brings his left fist to a pounding thud on the armor over his chest.

Eraden turns to Goldenhorn with an outstreched hand. "Hello friend." The minotaur's large hand wrapped around his own as his would have a childs'. "It seems we may be going on a journey together."

"Ay, Grava, look at dis won 'ere. Dis won like to 'ear 'imself someting fierce. Ol' Cyclops tink he da bossmon now," Spider remarked, still sitting casually at the bar, mulling over the job offer.

"Aye, he does. He seems like a new con...contenn...like tha new winner fer 'fancy lad!' Hahaha!" he throws back the rest of his eighth, or tenth, ale and offers another suitably dwarven belch.

"Wha' do ye think o' these folk lookin' fer help, Spider? Interested in makin' a bit o' coin? Tha drow's coin's gonna run out soon and we'll have to start buyin' our own drinks without it." He sees, however, that there seems to be no shortage of able-bodied adventurers looking for work.

Mallaby seems briefly taken aback by his first respondent, but recovers nearly instantly.
"My Lord Goldenhorn," he says. "It would be more than an honor to be accompanied on my voyage by so noble a personage."

"You'll reach your love before the time is up, don't worry." Letting go of the noble he stood back, "Names Perinithius, you can just call me Perin though."

"Master Perin," Mallaby says, turning to his second respondant, "I am touched. Touched indeed by your concern, and delighted to travel with you."

"Well met Lord Mallaby." The half-elf greets as he bows his head. "I am Eraden, Paladin of Palladys and an excellent escort." He says as he brings his left fist to a pounding thud on the armor over his chest.

Mallaby bows low. "Sir Eraden, I could not ask for more from an escort. I am deeply humbled by your offer of aid."

"Judkin," he shouts to the tabarded man, still waiting by the door. "My purse, please."

As his retainer makes his way across the room, Mallaby turns to a passing barmaid.

"Oh flower of beauty," he says to the nonplussed wench. "If I might be so bold, I wish to offer a libation to these good people. Please, if you could retrieve from your cellars, two--no, three bottles of Prem Arcis. The '53 if it is available. Thank you, my dear."

The thri-kreen's weapons are out in a flash as Tikchik rises to his feet. With expert skill the thri-kreen parries the warrior's blade and makes sure no innocents are caught in the flailing.

"Be careful, someone could lose an arm" Tikchik deadpans, holding up his stump as he speaks. Then he chuckles and returns to the drow as if nothing happened. "So what are you drinking there? Looks good." he states.

A bit of fluff there, but I would assume a level 9 ranger could parry a bit with Sharpe ;) [/sblock]
With the parry, Sharpe's swords flings out of his hands, and stabs into a nearby table. It nearly cuts off the left hand of a halfling who was playing the game every unintelligent man of low moral fiber play, "try to stab between the fingers with a dagger without cutting them off". Sharpe pulls it out of the wood, nearly decapitating the the halfling in the process.

*Paladin Talk*
A quest! No doubt you have heard of me, and request my aid in wherever it was you said. I lost interest after the first three words. MOVE COW MAN! Sharpe shouts, knocking Goldenhorn aside.

So you want me to slay your beloved?
The paladin gives Sharpe a look that even his mind can register. Ahem. slave, without the l, that is what I meant! he says. I would never dream of killing any of your loved ones (bluff=23). I will go on this quest of yours and... how much are you paying me again? I could use more gold to fill the royal coffers. Perhaps I will hire a dragon to lay on it. It would not seem proper otherwise Sharpe muses.

Sharpe, level 1 Valorous Bard, he is my 3rd character so I will gladly step aside for others. :)

Goldenhorn's nostrils flare and an angry rumble builds in his throat. He pauses to control his rage, then picks Sharpe up almost daintily by the collar and tosses him gently out of the tavern door.

Sharpe happens to land in Mallaby's carriage with a thunk. Or it would be a thunk if there was not so many soft pillows. I have "liberated" us a mode or transportation for this quest! you hear him shout through the door. Let me obliterate the footman and we can be on our merry way! he says, drawing his sword.

Eraden notices the subtle change in the man's voice and becomes alerted that this is not true. A man who would kill the loved ones of another he has just met, was he mad? An assassin perhaps? It no longer mattered to Eraden, he was now vigil of the lunatic before him.

After the man finishes his informal introduction, Eraden speaks. "This will not be a place of lies." His voice firm and commanding. "If you seek to harm any innocent then you do so at the peril of my sword and Palladys' might." He emphasizes this with the subtle placement of his hand on his sword's hilt.

Putting a smile back on, he walked over to the gathering group of adventurers. "Ay! Ya got de Spidah an de King a de Cup ta join ya as well."
