Valorous Smite in 3-D

How do you apply the paladin power Valorous Smite in 3-D? The power description says: "Each enemy within 3 squares of you is subject to your divine sanction [...]".

The second part of the power comes after a melee attack and affects each enemy within 3 squares of the paladin, but I cannot define the location or the area of effect (if it is such) created by the second clause of the power.

Because it resembles an area created by a close burst, I will propose to consider it as a close burst 3, like for example Divine Challenge, which is a close burst 5. The end result will be a 7 x 7 x 3 parallepid on the ground, subject to the rules of coverage and line of effect. What do you think?

This is important because I am planning a combat with flying monsters over the heads of the players. ;)

Shouldn't it be 7 x 7 x 4? I think that it extends 3 squares away from you (not counting the one which you occupy) also in the vertical dimension, Off course, the whole 3D thing is a bit tricky, since it is somewhat unreasonable to assume that human-sized character only occupies one square vertically.

7x7x4 seems right.

And a human occupying a 5-foot cube is an approximation, for the sake of simplicity.

I agree with the earlier posts. With a successful Valorous Smite, you mark all enemies in the 7 by 7 square area centered on you on the same level as you, as well as the same strata five feet above your level, ten feet above your level and fifteen feet above your level (7 by 7 by 4). If you were floating in air or water, it would also mark the strata five feet, ten feet and fifteen feet below yours (7 by 7 by 7 in total).

Nevermind. I was gonna say burrow counts too, but the ground would then be considered blocking terrain. . .

Didn't you ask this exact same question on the WOTC boards and get the same answers here as you got there?

Within 3 is anything within 3 squares of the character. It extends into all dimensions around the character except those the character doesn't have LoE to.

And as has been said before it is basically a Burst 3 around the character.

Seconding the idea that every square is a cube. A close burst 3 means you have 7x7x7 coverage, with some of those squares obviously extending beneath you.
