You Wanted Character Themes, You Got 'Em - Dragon 399 ToC

I see themes as "what defines you" and backgrounds as "what made you". Either option can independently influence a character's mechanics and narrative. There may be some descriptive overlap, but I don't think their fundamental reasons-to-be change much.

While the inclusion of themes is awesome, I am slightly disappointed that the theme articles make up the entirety of the content in this month's Dragon.

If this is the work done for the canceled Champions of the heroic tier, it means that no actual content was created specifically for this issue of Dragon.

...which, if true, means they are instead putting that work into future issues or releases, more than likely.

It's six of one, half-dozen of the other.

Yes, but how many of them have new content for the game (as opposed to advice, anecdotes, history etc) that was created specifically for this issue (as opposed to a book that was later canceled)? Either zero or one, depending how the Unearthed Arcana looks.
They're finally giving us a lot of something many people have been asking about, and still people are complaining. Unbelievable.

Honestly, why in the world is this important?

While it is true that there are more than four articles in Dragon this month, not all of them are content articles (such as the editorial, Ampersand, Confessions, and Alumni). Of the seven that remain:

Four are the theme articles
One is a Class Compendium article taken from the canceled book
One is a Nerathi Legends article, which is composed of the background work done for the board game, and to a lesser degree the Essentials line. The previous article also contained no player content. Interesting as it was, it was probably more suited as a Dungeon article.
One is an Unearthed Arcana article which appears to be more DM focused this month (speeding up combat), though I admit it may contain some player useful content. However, Unearthed Arcana articles are prefaced with the warning that they haven't been through full design & development or playtesting, so it's hard to consider anything in them as fully valid player content.

The point in my original post wasn't to say that I feel we're being cheated or short changed (though it could get to that point if this continues long enough). It was more a statement of confusion. If this issue of Dragon has no content that was specifically created for it, and the issues since the start of the year have been suffering from a dearth of content, and fewer books are going to be released this year, then what is all the man power at WotC being used for?

so what, I don't care if they made it for star wars, or Gama world, or a book or DDi... if it is goood and I can use it I will play for it...
