And then unleash all those 40 square range attacks? Cause the moment you move 39 squares away... you're now 4 squares off the ground... and your 1 movement is likely expended.

The party's Ranger is giving a class in the proper use of Great Bows.

But otherwise, yes, there will be very few range 40+ attacks.

Whenever I want to test an Adventure, I simply load up some standard 30th lvl templates I have in the Character Builder for a Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, Cleric & Paladin. I simply delevel them (if needed) to the level of the encounter and throw them in there.

I then play both sides in a fake encounter. It is a bit like playing Chess against yourself and you need to partition your thinking so that even though you know the beastie is about to throw his breath weapon at the party, the party don't know so they would act normally.

It is better if you do this exercise with a friend who has control of the party, but either way the net result is that soon into the battle (often before the monster(s) become bloodied) you realize if the encounter is too powerful or too weak.

I would only do this when thinking about bringing a mega destructive power on my players.

This method avoids you looking like a flimboid when the party rushes in, stuns the monster and beats it into a fleshy mess without trying - - there is 30 minutes left in the game session and they are like "Was that it??"
 


By RAW, if i recall correctly auras have no maximum height. So the moment you are closer to the Big T than 40 squares, on the flat X Y axis, you're pinned, even if you're flying in the stratosphere.

Where in the RAW does it say that...? I am not doubting you but it seems weird that all effects are treated as being cubed however an Aura is a column?

At 4E launch there was a lot of discussion about the subject.

Basically, 4E is higly 2-dimensional. It supposes all counters on the map to be on the same level or something like that.

All areas of effect just specify a square or rectangle. It doesn't say anything about "quote". The funny thing is that a sword blow could techincally hit an "adjacent" opponent 1 mile high.

Of course common sense suggest otherwise.

I had been avoiding the CB, but now it seems all my players use it. Finally after last game session I took it home on a memory stick.

So that's something to try. I now have to see why epic PCs are so scary; can they really stun everything in sight?

It's also clarified in the RC (pages 200 & 206). You first count the distance in squares as if they were at the same elevation and then you count their difference in elevation. Their distance is the higher of the two results
