D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

This is pure speculation.. I think WoTC caught 5e making out with Pathfinder so WoTC called off the engagement and decided to stick with 4e.

WotC: "We paid good money to send you to college, 4E. I don't want to see you hanging out with that Pathfinder guy. He's trouble."

4E: "But...but, dad! He's so cool!"

There is absolutely no way that Noonan and Wyatt didn't know what Bytopia was. Wyatt is credited as a designer in the 3E Manual of the Planes, and Noonan was its designer and editor.

There are several terms in the English language for that type of behavior, but I don't want to offend Eric's grandma.
How dare they. How DARE they poke fun at one slice of one of several otherdimensional cosmologies that people sometimes use in Dungeons and Dragons? What an outrage!

Please. Like youall were using guardinals and settings your campaigns in bytopia. To say nothing of the plane of vaccum. Spare me the flimsy excuses for unjustified rage.

It had a vocal and committed minority of fans while everyone else either didn't care or thought it was a load of garbage. Not unlike Forgotten Realms to be honest. It certainly wasn't serving the game at large for the base cosmology to come from Planescape. The core cosmology was one of 4E's big improvements, at least to the majority of us who aren't Planescape fanboys.
You don't even need the great wheel for planescape. If anything, 4e gives you more and better places to actually play in when you're not in sigil.

Hey guys, it's been a nice conversation so far. No reason to tell people how they should or shouldn't feel about something. Disagreement is fine and can be very productive for conversations, but let's keep it a discussion, and not turn it further into an argument. I've enjoyed reading the thread thus far, no reason to take away my fun ;)

As always, play what you like :)

I'm sorry, but describing something like that as 'that kind of behaviour', and claiming that such behaviour can only be described using obscenity is not productive in any way, shape or form. It's an absurd and vindictive mischaracterisation of a couple of actual human beings who would never be treated in that way if they worked for any other publisher.

While there are many things about 4E which bug me, the cosmology is not one of them. I very much enjoy the new cosmology, and have come to prefer it over 3rd Edition's Great Wheel.

On a related note, I never used the Great Wheel as written even while playing 3rd Edition. When I ran games, I had something more akin to what I suppose you could view as a set of gears. The planes were not static; they did not stay on one place relative to the rest of the wheel. Planes would shift and move like clockwork gears.

Ebberon has a similar concept with their planes, with different planes moving closer to and further away from the prime. Different eras in history have been influenced by this, iirc.

I do like the "sea" concept of 4E somewhat better than the "wheel" concept of late 2E/3E. That doesn't mean I don't like the outer planes, I just like the borders and positioning to be a bit more nebulous than they were depicted in earlier editions.

The idea of a great Armada departing from Hell to do battle with a Celestial fleet is something I'd like to try one day. Perhaps starting a campaign where the characters are survivors of that great battle, washed upon the shores of an outer plane of a forgotten, dead god...

I don't have a problem with WotC designers feeling that the Great Wheel was inadequate for whatever reasons and deciding to tear the whole thing down for 4E. It doesn't affect my campaigns in any way, and the settings I use are either long out of print or they already went through a cosmology change in 3.x (which I also ignored).

But if you don't see anything wrong with that podcast, I really have nothing else to say. I would have certainly said the same thing about other companies' employees, had I witnessed them displaying that kind of behavior.

Incidentally, guardinals are not from Bytopia.
