Why are there multiple editions of D&D but not other systems?

and we will be playing

I just need to point out that D&D 4e and D&D Essentials are not two different systems.

I just took this list from the Forum's drop-down menu when looking under systems. I know they are the same, but there are a few subtle differences and some people play just original 4E w/o any essentials builds allowed and some play only essentials builds. To each their own though, in my 4E game I allowed both into the campaign.

I just stole the drop-down box options from the Forums "systems" selection when creating a new thread. I also felt that there were many many more options than the 35 I listed and didn't want to listed out every edition to every system known to exist. I'd probably still be writing up the list now!

I voted D&D 1E, 3E and 4E.

Yeah, not a lot of variety for me recently.

Compared to some posters, not a lot of variety for me period.
