New Marvel RPG?

Yay, the game's become so popular, MWP had to increase their initial print run! Unfortunately, that means no books shipped until next week. Ah well, my pdf is holding up. :)

All across North America, Marvel fans are getting their first taste of Marvel Heroic Roleplaying from Launch Parties and demos at local conventions like Dreamation 2012 and Nerd Day in Robinson, Indiana. The response so far has been so great, we've had to go to our printer and expand the initial print run of the Basic Game. As a result, we've been told the books won't ship out until next week. If you're a Preferred Retailer, remember that any preorders your customers place will qualify for a free copy of the PDF. As soon as the books are in hand, we'll ship straight to distribution. If you'd like to talk about your best options for stocking the Basic Game in the first week of March, please get in touch with us directly!

This may be a stoopid question, but how would this game play out having read exactly no Marvel comics?

I mean, as a comparison - I had no knowledge of oWoD prior to Vampire and that was a blast... it just kinda unfolded.

Does this game rely heavily on knowing and appreciating the canon? Is it going to lack subtlety and context without a fan-based appreciation of the Marvel world? Or does it provide a lot of that accumulated knowledge?

I don't own the game as of yet, but based on available information, the game is built on an Event driven model with a current focus on the Modern Marvel universe. That said, many people are already using it to run other things. One person at RPG.net has hacked it to run Exalted. Some people have already built Buffy,Chuck, and the Greatest American Hero. Other people with no interest in Modern Marvel continuity are running games set in the Marvel Universe of the 1960's or 1970's or alternate time lines while some are running their own non-Marvel universes.

Therefore, I don't think one needs to now or appreciate the cannon.

I was excited into the game lead-up.

Then I got my PDF and was really excited. Gorgeous!

Then I tried to read it and I was confused. Very confused. They're coming out with examples of play, and rpg.net boasts quite a few, but I was left very confused by trying to absorb the rules.

Now I've listened to a podcast with actual play, and I've read examples, and I think I get it. I'm definitely still excited to play. It'll take a few tries to learn whether I like it better than Mutants & Masterminds, and there sure as heck are a lot of dice being rolled, but I think once you "get" it it runs quickly and cinematically. That makes me happy.

I have not bought it yet. There is so much that I like from reading about it at rpg.net. At the same time, I am not sold on the Event model (possibly, because I have no interest in the Modern Marvel universe), but that just means I only buy the Basic game book. I am also concerned about all of the dice rolled and the, overly, broad specialties. Still, I can't wait to get it regardless of whether it allays my concerns or it turns out not to be for me. For the price, it is hard to beat and, worse case scenario, I can draw a lot of inspiration for other games.

Yup. I felt the same way when I first read Smallville. Cortex+ is a different system. And there were a couple sections of MHR that I had to read and re-read. It takes a play to actually wrap your head around Stress, Assets, Resources and Stunts and how they all differ, though I'm betting the example of play Cam is writing up will help a lot.

I was in a playtest last weekend at Dreamation and had a blast. I know little of the Marvel Universe except Chris Clairmont X-Men. I played Daredeveil who I was only familiar with from movie trailers. It was a great con event.

I'm reading the PDF and building a MapTool framework for it. I didn't really intend to play the game at all - I'm only reading it in order to build the framework at the request of some Twitter folks - but reading through the book makes it sound like a lot of fun.
