New Marvel RPG?

I don't see the point in starting lowly as heroes. That's your call. No comics do that: what you see is what you get. Captain America hasn't gotten stronger, he's just more famous. Neither has Spider-man. Heroes are heroes. The only reason homebrew heroes would be weaker is because the players don't believe they're stronger, or need the actual comic heroes to be on a pedestal, so they build their characters "weaker". Meh.

So far the game reminds me of the Dragonlance games: modules based on adventures you could read.

fyi: Those hereos were standard PC heroes of low level, but ask someone to stat up Raistlin and they'll always make him uber smart so he can dominate. Meh. Ditto any of the FR characters from the books.

Starting "lowly" is part of many super hero stories, especially modern ones. For instance, even though Kickass wasn't a super hero you see him start out as an every day geek and improve as a crime fighter.

Spiderman you see him start out as a everyday nerd get super powers and then improve as a super hero as he gets more experienced. Hell he even gets more powerful as a result of obtaining the Venom suit and then lateron by building his own special suits or having Tony Stark and Mr Fantastic build one for him.

The same thing also happened with Superman (remember he originally jumped high and ran super fast), and even Batman.

So yeah, the assumption that super heroes never gain levels would be flawed. In fact, I assume that super heroes would, but their progression in power isn't as steep as that of say a DnD wizard, its more like a DnD commoner but with a new super heroic feat or gadget thrown in every severa levels.

Several of the original New Mutants improve over time.

Several of the original X-men became more powerful over time. Iceman's powers develop where is creating ice rather than snow and can do various effects, Marvel Girl's Telekinesis improves, and Cyclops gets more physical prowess after the original team is replaced by the international team ("He trains the X-men hard and himself harder").

Wolverine started becoming more badass as his popularity grew-beginning with the Claremont/Miller Wolverine mini-series

Rogue gains Ms. Marvel's powers just before joining the X-men.

Kitty Pryde learns how to phase individual part of her body and phase others.

Dazzler gets hand to hand training from the X-men

Sue Richards became more powerful under John Byrne's time writing Fantastic 4 volume 1. She gets hand to hand training from Cap. Learns how to use force field powers for all different types of effects including battle staves.

The Thing is said to have undergone a permanent strength improvement when he went from lumpy to rocky and has had other increases at times (e.g., spiky Thing)

Richard Rider, the Man Called Nova improves. His strength improves and he gets his Nova Blast.

Powerman, in the Cage series, undergoes a huge strength boost from his early days.

She Hulk is said to get her stronger from her days in her first comic by working out with the Thing's weights after joining the Fantastic 4.

Dr. Strange was still both learning things and getting aid (e.g., a ring) from the Ancient One in his early Strange Tales appearances.

In addition what was just posted about several X-Men, I have to add the following.

Iceman now can (as of the first arc of Wolverine and the X-Men) create multiple ice clones of himself which he can control. It's also shown that AoA Iceman has this power, but can make GIANT Iceman Clones and can sense/speak threw them.

Angel who went through multiple changes in power can now Heal (He died while being the Ascendant Arch-Angel of the Apocalypse and was resurrected with the 'Life Seed' during Uncanny X-Force's Dark Angel Saga).

Wolverine is so awesome he can regenerate from a single cell!

Legion whose powers was always dynamic (he has powers tied to multiple personalities, and can absorb people who die near him), has the power to create alternate realities (he did this two or three times already) and he he recently Absorbed Cthulhu into his mind!

Cypher... went from understanding languages to being a corpse then was resurrected and can now kick you butt because he can now anticipate attacks as a result of "understanding the language you fight in."

Now that I think of it, some characters have a very steep power progression.

Tony Stark used to be just a smart millionaire womanizing alcoholic that invented the Iron Man armor and associated tech. Now, his whole body is a brain, making him hypersmart and able to interface and hack any computer on the planet. With his mind. Including tech invented by Reed Richards.

[/my usual response to Marvel Zombies who bash DC for being "overpowered" and 'unrelatable']

All of the character growth mentioned so far is covered by the game, if that helps assuage any fears. But there aren't any levels or point totals.

Cheers,

I read Breakout last night, and it will be interesting to see how it translates to an adventure. There are moments when I thought, "If that doesn't happen, how does this continue?" Obviously the adventure is event-based, and that's alright, but hopefully it's not ham-fisted in its railroady-ness.

Otherwise, I'm pretty excited about this game!

My only fear in running Marvel events (especially X-men) is that since there is no Editorial mandated stupidity, Deus ex Machina or pointless standing around written in to ensure a "6+ issue run w/ tie ins", Heroes will end up steamrolling through some events (assuming the aren't written as railway lines with built in Deus ex Machina) , have their characters fail miserably, or the players will loath the adventure due to it being unplayable and dependant on deus ex machina to complete (*cough* Fear Itself).

Seriously, if the Secret Invasion event book ends like the actual EVENT then it would be unplayable since the key deciding plot point happened in Deadpool (that being Osborn finding out how to kill the Skrull Queen), and even worse is the fact that I doubt many players will enjoy having a badguy NPC randomly show up to kill the BBeG of the adventure at the end of the final battle.

Will there be a book or books doing anything with the Ultimate Marvel line? Does the license allow for only X number of books or does it allow for potentially unlimited? Of all the new games coming out this is one of the few that has me excited.

Our license covers the Marvel Universe, and we've been able to go with the Age of Apocalypse (itself an MU alternate) for one of our Events, so I don't think it's out of the question. Whether we go beyond the current lineup for 2012 really just depends on how things go with the license, so I'm pretty hopeful we could do more.

Cheers,
Cam
