The DM doesn't make them stand and fight anything! The PCs are not entitled to beat every monster they encounter. The real problem is that the desision to run away took so long to come to thanks in part to the dragon's deceptively small size.

Had the dragon physically been gargantuan, I think the group would have made the decision to flee at a much more opportune time. That they managed to get 80 damage on the Buffed up, SR 25 dragon is a testament to their capabilities.

While I agree that, yes, in theory, PCs should be able to escape in most circumstances (at least the option should be there), this simply isn't the case in many campaigns. Not all DMs have a mindset to allow this, and the OP has confirmed his DM is a douche that way.

Moreover, many monsters straight out of the book have mobility and sensory options that cannot be escaped from short of teleporting/plane shifting away. Which this group cannot do. Running away is easier said than done if you're a Full Plate Fighter, a Halfling, or a Dwarf with no escape spells (left). A DM must work extra hard at encounter design if he wants to keep escape an option.

Getting away from a CR 15 dragon? At level 9? Given their DM? Not bloody likely.

Also, if the situation were reversed - how many PC parties let their enemies escape to fight another day? Most try to never, never let that happen.

we did just find a quaal's feather token tree that may be usefull... (could we expanded it inside of the dragon or use it pin it to the ceiling you think?)

Salvation is at hand! Here's what you do. Throw that token as hard as you can above the dragon's head and just as it reaches its apex, have someone else shout the command word to activate it.

**Warning Math Approximations and Fuzzy Rule Interpretation to Follow**

The token activates and springs into being and falls. The tree has a five foot diameter trunk and is 60 feet tall. We'll ignore the canopy because it makes the math easier and we can model the tree as a cylinder. Assuming a density of 45 lbm/cft we get a mass of 53,014 lbm. Which is a weight of 53,014 lbf, assuming an Earth like gravity and a little bit of hand waving. (Oh how my physics professors would weep if they saw that.)

Now if we look at Table 4-7 in complete warrior we can figure out how much damage it would do. 5d6 + 1d6/200 lbs above 400 lbs. 268d6 damage or 938 on average. Even if you allow a reflex for half damage, its still 469 damage. You should clearly roll it out and see if you can get 1,000 damage.

Now if your GM is generous and realizes how screwed you are, this may just work. Though I would be afraid to try it twice or you may find every enemy throwing feather tokens at you. ;)

Has anyone attempted to disbelieve?
It wouldn't be as powerful as the real thing if it was an illusion, barring Shadowcraft Mage fun, and they'd have seen through it by now. Even if not, it would be doing reduced damage from being quasi-real.

Most likely, a 100 HP should be enough damage if it was a Shadow Conjuration of a [Huge] Very Old Green Dragon. If the DM did give it maximum HP, it would have 104. So evil if that is the case!

The monster's reduced damage only affects those creatures that recognize it as a shadow creature.

Prioratize:

1. see if there is a reasonable chance of escaping. If this is possible see 5, if this is impossible/fails see 2.
2. stand your ground and keep whacking, try and get swallowed and use the tree expansion trick. If this works see 4, if this fails but you are swallowed see 3, if this fails and your not swallowed see 6.
3. cast your rope trick from inside the dragons stomach, making it virtually untargetable for the goblin caster's dispel magic. Rest, get the best spell selection you can get for escaping and try to escape first thing next day. If this works see 5, if this fails see 2, most likely followed by six.
4. (some of) you guys won the encounter, and there was much rejoycing. Hurray!
5. (some of) you guys escape with your lifes. Meh, could be worse.
6. you be dead. so very very dead. maybe you got a rich uncle with acces to some ressurection spells?

Alright so we managed to get our rogue into the dragon and after several turns he made his way into it's stomach where he set of the tree, which ripped two huge holes in the dragon and rooted it too the ground. It however did not kill said dragon, so the rogue climbed back up its throat grabbed it's uvula and thrust his sword up through the dragon's nasal passages and into it's brain slaying the vile beast.

Well i thank you all for the help you gave. :D
