The DM doesn't make them stand and fight anything! The PCs are not entitled to beat every monster they encounter. The real problem is that the desision to run away took so long to come to thanks in part to the dragon's deceptively small size.
Had the dragon physically been gargantuan, I think the group would have made the decision to flee at a much more opportune time. That they managed to get 80 damage on the Buffed up, SR 25 dragon is a testament to their capabilities.
we did just find a quaal's feather token tree that may be usefull... (could we expanded it inside of the dragon or use it pin it to the ceiling you think?)
So how screwed are we?
It wouldn't be as powerful as the real thing if it was an illusion, barring Shadowcraft Mage fun, and they'd have seen through it by now. Even if not, it would be doing reduced damage from being quasi-real.Has anyone attempted to disbelieve?

Anything "tainted" is never good.In the last session me and my primary group ended mid battle with us pited against a varriant of the green dragon (huged sized) our DM created and from what we can tell it severally tainted.
