D&D 5E What do you want to see as the 5e Iconics?

5e is all about nostalgia, so some iconics, perhaps reprised from 3e, or dug up from AD&D somewhere (Gutboy Barrelhouse, Aggro the Axe, Emerikol the Chaotic...), certainly wouldn't hurt.
Yeah, that would be pretty cool. Also Morgan Ironwolf from the Basic set. And that poor gnameless gnome who was always getting eaten by ghouls.

Aleena the Cleric?

Or how about Eric the Fighter (Cavalier), Diana the Rogue (Acrobat), Sheila the other Rogue, Hank the Ranger, Presto the Wizard, Bobby the Barbarian...

Just kidding, of course. :)

I'll probably get lynched for this, but it doesn't get much more iconic D&D than this guy:

That's Edward Scissorhands after a close encounter with the bleach bucket, isn't it? ;)

I'm inclined to think that the Iconics were more useful than not - they gave a ready source of characters on whom to hang examples in the text, without constantly having to reintroduce things. < snip >

Also, several of the miniatures already exist. If you want to play the 5ENext playtest with minis, grab minis of:
- Jozan for the human cleric of Pelor;
- Lidda for the lightfoot halfling rogue;
- Eberk for the dwarf cleric of Moradin;
- Tordek for the dwarf fighter.

That leaves the eladrin wizard to be found; but there was a female eladrin wizard in the #1 "Arcane Heroes" set of the "Players Handbook Heroes" line. (Did WotC ever announce a name for her?)

As far as characters, races, or classes go, I'd rather see interesting looking characters rather than a set of "names" who get repeated on every cover of every book.

The fact that Seoni can't seem to put any clothes on and I despise Wayne Reynolds is enough to make me never want to see D&D have "main characters".

I'd like to see fully fledged characters in the examples and not just named mechanical combos. Try to make the iconics so cool I'd want to play them. It's not that hard. I'd gladly play Raistlin for instance but I would never play Jozan.
While your at it create a campaign that supports those characters for a bunch of adventures.

As long as:

-I never have to see a new picture of Mialee (shudder)

-The iconics don't invade every book cover, chapter opener + every second picture (hyperbole but 3rd and PF overdo it by far)

-There's multiple depictions for members of each class in each classes PHB entry

So when I take my first look at the rogue class, I see Lidda (iconic, used in multiple pieces), the OPs cool old dwarf guy (great archetype btw) and the tiefling girl from 4th, that would be quite neat.

The wizard could have a pointy hat, mystery elf and dungeonpunk version, etc.

Whatever they like for iconics is fine, as long as they are depicted in a more appealing style than the 3e ones.

Mialee has to be the ugliest representation of an Elf I have ever seen, anywhere.

Based on a thread I was reading a while back on the WotC boards, I don't think it is fair to blame the art style. I think Mailee is just ugly. Seriously, there are no "pretty" drawings of her in any book I've ever seen. She is just damned ugly.

I think it would be cool if they used (basic) versions of some of the random people who showed up in the 3e splat books. (Lady Sora I think was one such example) The kinds of characters that CreativeJuices7 had so much fun playing with and expanding. (If you don't know who CJ7 are then don't worry about it.) The point is we already have dwarven fighters, elven wizards and halfling rogues; I think it would be cool if we started displaying characters who were a little odd but still completely justified as a character choice. Show us the knight who doesn't look like the slayer, a guardian who doesn't look like the knight. Or an acrobat who doesn't look like the pickpocket. Or the warlock who doesn't resemble the sage. But all built using the same rules. This is exactly what I expect to see with the new themes and backgrounds for 5e.
