Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle Excerpts
Adv 1 Fane of the Sun Swallower

By D&D Team

In today's preview, we peek inside Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle. The first adventure in the book's Daggerford campaign begins in Daggerford, during the public hanging of a Red Wizard.

What do you think?

Too much upfront bad guy back story which the PCs (or many DMs) are not going to care about.

So the Red Wizards are still around after the next Realms Shaking Event?

I think the amount of backstory is fine. It'll probably be relevant later in the adventure.

The only thing I would criticize are the half-orc bandits. Unless this is Eberron, half-orcs are a marginal race and aren't found in such large quantities. (In most settings, half-elves are kind of rare too, and you won't find full bands of them. Instead, you find half-Xs living in one or the other communities, possibly on the edge due to prejudice.)

There are definitely elements in this adventure that could be really fun and memorable. It could also pull in a bunch of exploration and roleplaying, so we'll get to see how they envision the Three Pillars in play.

It's hard to judge an adventure from it's text (let alone a plot summary), but they sound like they're on the right track.

Agreed. It sounds like that backstory will be very relevant as the party tries to resolve the situation with the dragon.

Cheers!

I'm a little confused as to why you'd think every D&D player knows about every castle in the Forgotten Realms, whether or not they've ever played there.

...because, we're D&D players. Obviously. :p

EDIT: That and the product description mentioned the Sundering, which is a FR-specific event that's been mentioned for several months now.

The Forgotten Realms "Sundering" event is going to be pushed hard with the development of DNDNext, as mentioned at last year's GenCon. With the start of Vault of the Dracolich game day event, and upcoming DND Encounters, I'm thinking the default campaign world for adventures may be Forgotten Realms for Next.

The next two Encounters adventures are both FR related, and I can see all foreseeable Encounters adventures being FR focused as they move through the Sundering event leading up to release of DNDNext and beyond to a release of a FR campaign book with all the updates.
