D&D 5E Things that make you want to buy 5E

I like that it feels like D&D but is modern and streamlined in design, that it's a potentially balanced version of D&D that does so without sacrificing the feel of the game.

I like the focus on customization and making the game your own. I love the ease of hacking and house ruling the game.

I like how magic items are handled, being less about math and pricing and more about creativity. How magic items are more optional and less essential to the game.

The way that +1 swords are now unique and flavourful things and not just an add-on to a die roll is a great addition.

I agree, not with the bounded accuracy part, but the flavorful creation of each magic weapon and armor with traits like 'glow when a specific enemy type is near' or 'feels cold to the touch'. Very nice.
 

1) Bounded accuracy, holy crap. There are not words for how excited I am by the possibility of high-level characters who still have to consider mundane threats in their planning.

2) Proficiency bonus, and all the things that grant it. Super elegant. I hated D&D4's approach to skills, but I understood what it was trying to do. I am gratified that D&D5 is trying a different, promising solution, and also that there will probably be a D&D3-style skill module down the road that I can implement for campaigns requiring more intricate plots.

3) Backgrounds. I love that there's something new in there, mixing up the tested race+class combo. I miss specializations, but the new feat system doesn't offend and subclasses should be easy enough to houserule, especially if Wizards slaps us with the expected glut of examples.

4) Exploration rules. I've always had trouble with overland travel in D&D.

5) Verisimilitude. When I read these rules I'm not constantly asking myself the question, "Why?"
 




What are the things that make you want to buy 5E?

I think this is a very difficult question to answer honestly, as we actually know very very little about what 5E is going to look like. We know it will have Advantage/Disadvantage, but at this stage, almost everything else is up in the air.

There's a lot of stuff that it could do that would make me like it, but I'm not sure it will do any of it. Nor am I sure that it won't.

Given that it's six months from release, I think they might want to get back to putting out preview articles with final information in them. They must have that info, as it is probably at the printers already (or will be within weeks).
