D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

I'm not concerned about pricing. Just check other role-playing game product like the new Star wars RPG or the WH40K RPG from FFG they are in the same price range. BTW the $20 price for the original 3.0 release was actually an early bird special price.

Now from the text blurbs it seems that the optional modules and the magic items will be in the DMG, not in the PHB so we'll have to wait till November for them unless WotC releases some of it in PDF format to keep us waiting.

Anyhow I feel that with the wealth of available information (Tiamat adventures, playtest material, starter box) it will be easier to compensate for the lack of MM and DMG.

Got my pre-orders in, except for the Starter Set (the price diff is small enough to pick-up locally) and the DM screen (will probably pick up locally too).

Pre-ordered everything... except the minis, which i need to see more of. It's spread out over several months so not much of a sting. And amazon has nice discounts on some of it already.

I am very excited for the new edition but I'm bummed that WotC is so mum about everything. i am expecting them to do something more formal today but still, it feels unprofessional to have all these products go on sale before they announced anything.

Obligatory new edition cover-art reaction:

Overall art-direction: They are obviously going for action shots on all the covers. Thats ok. I just hope they have more art catering to the "exploration" side of D&D in the books. Lots of strange and wondrous landscapes, dungeons, etc.

Player's Handbook: 7/10 (Cool! Is this a "Against the Giants"-style adventure? No? Is it the PHB? Oh ok)

Dungeon Master's Guide: 8/10 (This must be the Monster Manual! No wait, is it the DMG? Oh ok)

Monster's Manual: 8.5/10 (Bonus point for depicting a beholder that looks fearsome and not silly).

I can't wait to buy the books :)

Yup, nicely played! It does surprise me, though. It would seem their plan is provide a cheap starter set, and then you get the big hardcovers to expand the game to what you want. I do hope the starter set has chargen, though. I suspect it does, since levels go up 1-5; if you're putting in that much character advancement, it's nothing to include how to roll/assign ability scores, choose race, choose class, and buy equipment. No doubt each class will come with a pre-set background. Here's hoping it's more Mentzer Red Box than 4e Red Box.
I'm almost positive there won't be any chargen rules. Quoting from the product page on the Wizards website, the intro box will contain the following:

  • A 64-page adventure book with everything the Dungeon Master needs to get started
  • A 32-page rulebook for playing characters level 1 – 5 (emphasis added)
  • 5 pre-generated characters, each with a character sheet and supporting reference material
  • 6 dice
With a $20 price point to hit, it's safe to say they aren't including anything that isn't strictly required. If the product page doesn't say it's there, it probably isn't. In 32 pages, they have to fit in the usual introductory stuff ("This is what an RPG is. This is what a Dungeon Master is. Here's an example of play."), plus all the rules for playing the game. I can't see how they could possibly incorporate chargen rules too. Looking at the final public playtest, the "How to Play" document alone is 29 pages.

True, they mention "supporting reference material" for the prefab characters, but there's no reason for that to include chargen rules. It will surely be the bare minimum of spells and abilities required to take each character from 1 to 5.

I will almost certainly buy it anyway. :)

I do like the art, as well. Is it me, or is that the classic dragonpersand?

Sure does look like it.

I'm afraid you're misremembering. 3e was definitely staggered - in fact, the third-party "Creature Collection" came out before the "Monster Manual" for that edition.

You might be thinking of 3.5e? Those three were released all at once, though they were priced at $30 each.

My favorite 3.0 adventure was the one I made with the little preview section at the back of the 3.0 PHB (the cd in the back of it was not such a success).

Also, where the 3.0 DMG and MM 20 each?

As for 5E: I am excited. Timing is perfect for me. And there are clearly options if you want to jump right in.

Check the Icons of the Realms: Starter Set.

It definitively looks like the classic dragon-fire-breathing ampersand !

Check the old Dragon's Eye View Ampersand article (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4dreye/20120404)

It looks like the number 7 one ^_^
The new logo is up on the Neverwinter MMO blurb here.

Looking at the selection from the Dragon's Eye View, it appears to be combo of 7 and 18.

Works for me, I guess. I can't really expect them to go back to the classic version.
