Intro to an art order

Well, that was fun

I was putting together some art guidelines for O.L.D. and N.E.W. so that the detailed art order could be compiled. Here's the intro to it. I think I've hit on the basics fairly well there.

“Anime-like” or cartoony styles should be avoided. We're going for a more realistic approach here. Don't be afraid to sometimes depict non-“bodily perfect” characters – not everyone is a bodybuilder or a supermodel. Make it feel real. Avoid chainmail bikinis and deliberately skimpy armor unless there is a very good reason for it. Equal gender representation, it's very important to have diverse ethnicity, too (for humans - doesn't matter for blue aliens with knobbly heads!), and no explicitly exploitative poses or images. Avoid supersized “anime” swords. Where possible, figures should be depicted in context.

maybe you left it in another paragraph, but you've pretty much told me what you don't want to see.

I don't see some indicator of what setting or style you do want? sci-fi? it's implied but not stated.

line art? elmore-like paintings, comic book "realistic?

It's an introduction to a book-length art order specifying exact individual pieces. The artist knows what book he/she's illustrating. They get the manuscript, too. :)

That was just some overall guidelines on gender/ethnicity issues and general approach.

Its a very good intro and I'm glad its the route you've chosen. I do NOT envy you the work that went into that art order though.

I'd avoid saying what it shouldn't be like, whether that's "anime" or cartoonish. Suggest what it should have similarities to, such as Osprey Publications historical (and other) books, something similar to the 2300AD art for SF material. As things stand, the Frenzied Berserker from 3.x is possibly acceptable, while Balsa probably isn't due to being from an anime. I don't think that's what you're aiming at.

Fortunately, I'm working with the awesome folks at Savage Mojo who are taking on a lot of the load!
