D&D 5E Saving Throws design choice

I hadn't noticed this.

That's a terrible disappointment to me. It also is one of the few things that makes me think they've actually screwed up a major goal of the edition. There are other decisions that at least I felt I could nod one way or another towards a preferred edition or another, but giving classes proficiency with certain saves, then ignoring those save types.

Especially since it makes the stats even more unbalanced against each other. Why, yes, Dex, you are the awesome stat. Hey, Con, looking gold.

Charisma? Back of the bus. Begone.

I'm going to reserve judgement. Which I think is best in this situation until the complete rules actually come out. Personally we won't min max etc etc so I really like this idea of saves but eh, we will see.

pokereleran : seems like a lot of people are upset that there are now 6 saves but really only 3 are used. Plans to address this in the PHB?
mikemearls : the saves are a DM tool as much as anything. That said, we handed out skill proficiencies knowing there is a disparity.

So each class has one good "spell" save and one good "DM" save? I'm cool with that. This is in line with what I thought in the first place. When I heard about six saves, my thought wasn't "I wonder what spells will be changed to save for each ability?" it was "I can't wait to try this as a DM."

This was pointed out multiple times on the WoTC forums along with saves getting harder to make as PCs level up.

I play C&C which used 6 ability saves as well but there you add your entire level to your saves and they divided the common categories over the 6 abilities.

I think it was confirmed a while ago that there will be some use of the other 3 saves in the full game. Notice how each class gets one good save (Dex/Con/Wis) and one bad save (Str/Int/Cha).

Someone mentioned in another thread they were going to make death saving throws (which aren't saving throws in the 5E sense anyway) CHA saves. I quite like that, once you're at death's door it is your force of personality that is going to save you!

Skill proficiency breakdown:

STR: 1
INT: 5
CHA: 4
(Total for the 'throw-away saves': 10)

vs.

DEX: 3
CON: 0
WIS: 5
(Total for the 'meaningful saves': 8)

That's so close that I can't really see where they've succeeded in making proficiency usage offset the save usage if that was indeed their desired means of achieving balance. In fact, for one of the 'save pairs' suggested earlier (STR/CON, INT/DEX, & CHA/WIS), the balance still leans toward the 'meaningful saves' side (WIS gets 5 proficiencies vs. CHA getting 4).

Perhaps I'm looking at it too simply, & it's about each class's proficiencies? That's a more detailed analysis that would require the PHB to run the numbers for each class, though.

Each class we know about. Somehow I suspect Rangers will get something like Con/Wis. I wonder if Monks will get more good saves than other classes?

I think what he meant is that they're giving out saving throw proficiencies knowing there is a disparity. As in, every class only gets one good save (Dex/Con/Wis) and one bad save (Str/Int/Cha).
