D&D 5E Tiefling preview!

Probably a safe bet...

Hellish rebuke
warlock (infernal) attack 1
At-WillKeywords: arcane, fire, implement
Standard Action
Range: ranged 10
Target: one creature
Attack: Constitution vs. Reflex
Hit: "1d6 + Constitution modifier fire damage. The first time you take damage before the end of your next turn, the target takes 1d6 + Constitution modifier fire damage."
Level 21: "2d6 + Constitution modifier damage and extra damage."[PHB:132][U:W]
5E-ifying the spirit of the above, my guess is it'll cast as a reaction, like shield. Fire damage? Necrotic would be a li'l more hellish.

I will admit that the Cantrip Tieflings get is perfect for creating spooky effects.

I will also note that aside from fire resistance and the +2 to Charisma the 5e Tiefling resembles the PS Teifling then the 4e Tiefling, mechanically speaking. I'm refering to the innate spells, like in PS they can summon darkness for example.

Also the 4e power that made it into the 5e Tiefling playtest is gone.

If lovin' you is wrong, I don't wanna be right?

That song is so much more Romantic in the original goblinish.

Anyway for those that fear the 2e Tiefling is gone, the Planetouched race is mention in the playtest as having the old Tiefling in it. I will also mention that because Tieflings breed true no matter what they could have demon blood as welll.

Oh and I'll point out that the Tiefling could have a third page, we don't know the Tieflings page count as it was the finL race in the ToC. So they could have subraces, although the +1 to intelligence makes that unlikely.

I will also know note the irony that the race closest to the lawful Evil devils has an tendancy to be Chaotic.

Oh and the Tiefling horns are more varied, previously in 4e they were all curled now they have more shapes you can choose from.

All that aside, I really like the 5e Tiefling and it will be my first race to play when the PHB comes out. Maybe a Tiefling Paladin. Weirdly the Tiefling is perfect for Paladins.

This is the first 5E art I'm not a fan of.

I like the CONCEPT behind the piece, I'm just not enthused about the brushstrokes being so plainly visible. It seems messy and unclear instead of the crispness I've grown used to.

ETA: Looks like they've gone with the 4E fluff.

I agree. Direction is great, but the broad brush strokes makes it look as if WOtC went for quantity over quality for the filler and even into mid level stuff like characters.

They clearly didn't skimp on the major pieces though. The Tiamat painting is amongst my faves.

I do kind of miss Aasimar not being put alongside Tieflings, but I guess I had to get used to that idea back in 4e. I do have to admit that from a RP standpoint, Aasimar aren't quite as interesting as Tieflings. *shrug*

Weren't Aasimar just renamed to Deva in 4e? Felt like they were pretty much the same thing.
