D&D 5E PH(B) Hermit Background

I like this background. It has depth and is full of role-playing hooks. I can empathise with that. Maybe I was a hermit in an earlier life. Maybe I discovered the secret of reincarnation and I came back as .. me.

That's .. kinda scary.

It's also interesting that the Background does not get Survival, so presumably it is a lot more of a civilised hermit than some anchorite living on a rocky atoll.

I don't know how often it'll get used, but I like the idea of an older character who comes down out of the mountains because he's learned some terrible secret and must act to save the world.

Thaumaturge.

I'm not sure if you were talking about the background or the specific concept you mentioned, but I think this is a background that might get quite a lot of use. It's pretty much textbook monk. I can see much more use out of this than out of jester. I mean, jester? Might as well be a kender jester while you're at it, just to annoy the rest of the party even more than either will already do by themselves.

It could probably be called "Religious Hermit". This isn't a guy who just doesn't like people so he stays away. This is a person who is trying to understand the deeper meanings and secrets of life through prayer and reflection in solitude.

Hopefully, the recluse gets a background, too. But he probably won't people are never nice to him. It's why he stays away.

Thaumaturge.

Its like this was built exclusively for the Druid class and old-wise-man style characters who know everything and dont tell you anything until right before they die.
