D&D 5E Monsters as templates?

I am working on converting an adventure. The original calls for a berserker Bugbear and no such thing exists in 5e (officially). I'm thinking about merging the Berserker and Bugbear, always keeping the higher stat of the two, and then adding the berserker traits to it but I'm not sure this is the best way to go about it.
Thoughts and input welcomed.

I would just give the Bugbear the Reckless Trait tbh. It will keep the flavour and be less maths.
