D&D 5E Anything You Miss From Past Editions vs 5E?

I'm liking what I'm reading but some things just bug me.

No variable crit multipliers and threat range on weapons? :erm:

No creatures larger than Gargantuan?

No huge spells like the old Gate?

In regards to the first two I am wondering if they might print some more optional rules.

Clearly defined combat roles of 4e (defender, striker, leader, controller)

Without those it seems party makeup tends to be, "A cleric, and whatever everyone else wants to play"

That's about all I'm missing though.

The only things I miss from old editions are:
  • slower advancement (months between levels)
  • treasure=xp
  • save or die effects/poisons
  • casting time/interruption (chucking a rock at the guy in the middle of casting a fireball was so much fun).

That's pretty much it.

Hopefully some of these things will show up in the DMG that I loved in AD&D:

* world building guides
* castle construction and realm management rules
* water-based and air-based combat
* 2e psionics (I know...)
* AD&D style modules (drag and drop into anywhere, 30-40 pages in a folded cover/map format)
* loyalty/morale ala 1e.

Other than that, the art. I liked the variation in styles, and having black/white art as well as full color. Trampier, Otus, Elmore, Easley, Willingham, Holloway....I would love to see some of that b/w lineart back in D&D

The confirmation roll on critical hits. I absolutely hate when I can only be hit on a natural 20, so every single attack that hits me deals double damage.

Or for that matter, I miss critical hits being an optional rule in the first place. I would just get rid of them, but there are too many small things in the system that rely on them.

In addition to some of the things said above,

Henchmen and hirelings (though Mike Mearls did tell me they were going to be in the DMG)

Backstab as a multiplier of damage instead of sneak attack additional dice of damage

1e/2e multiclass rules (I know it was mentioned above but I REALLY want this)

Rolling initiative every round

Saving throw getting easier at higher levels
