so, would you be ok with it effecting male characters removing charactristics that men identify with in the real world?

edit: and if someone doesn't understand how a woman would consider breasts a major part of there self identity look up what happens with breast cancer and when you need to have them removed...

Yes, I would definitely be fine with the male gender being changed also. Why would I be unwilling to play a character that does not mirror my real life physical characteristics?

It's always interesting where people draw the line. A humanoid race that looks reptilian and may be descended from dragons is fine even though it may have unrealistic body structure, tails, and wings. But add breasts and suddenly there is a problem.

Last time I checked reptiles don't have mammary glands to feed their young . If they are descended/evolved from dragons it doesn't make any sense for them to have breasts or nipples (unless the dragons are giving birth to live young and nursing them like a mammal).

Interestingly I found this as the reason why female Dragonborn are depicted as having breasts:

WOTC said in a panel a while back that the 4E Dragonborn had curves because their previous attempts at differentiating the genders (size, horn shapes, neck frills etc) kept scoring low with test audiences.

You're generalising a generalisation. I don't want to get into a whole gender debate so suffice it to say that there are more types and representations of gender than merely genitals represent.

I'll ask my sister about that but I'm pretty sure she still considers herself a woman.

Dude. It's a fantasy race. If you really need "realism" then accept that they're not reptiles, they're HUMANOIDS.

may I suggest you do so carefully and with a lot of sympathy... my mother had a lot of hard times coming to grips with it even after having an implant replace it...

On a players perspective the women I game with tend to like their characters to look feminine, when they play dragonborn they like that it has breasts so they identify with it more. But different people different views, some women might dislike dragonborn with boobs and would rather play them without in this case just say those dragonborn are flat chested or say all female dragonborn in your world don't have breasts. It is like bearded dwarven women, sounds funny and all but I have never met a female gamer who wanted to play a bearded dwarven woman, but plenty that like to play dwarves.

Thank you for reminding me of another misogynist bs that needs to die in a fire...

In a non-human race? Sure.

I don't think any of you are getting HardcoreDandDGirl 's point.

She's not saying it makes sense that females of nonhuman species have breasts, nor that all female humans have breasts. All she's saying is that giving female members of non-human species breasts helps them appeal to the majority of female gamers who do have breasts and can therefore relate to them more easily.

I'm glad the three of you are open-minded about playing 'the other,' but I've met enough male gamers who only play male characters to say that if the PHB explicitly stated that male elves don't have penises, it would give them more than a few seconds' pause.

If 4th edition Minotaurs had been portrayed as having human chests (I.e no fur), then it might have looked more plausabile. But 4th ed Minotaurs are basically Bulls standing upright, albeit with furry arms and legs. In other words, they look like animals both top and bottom, unlike (say) Merfolk which have clearly Human-looking upper halves. And Dragonborn are the spawn of Dragons, which definitely don't have breasts. Anyway, what male anatomy...? Aside from bulging muscles, I have yet to see a D&D monster with a penis (or even a noticeable bulge drawn in the pants).

I think artists portray anthropomorphic creatures in different ways. If the creature is meant to be more alien or monstrous it probably would have fewer features consistent withhumans.
