Legendary monsters and their lairs in the Monster Manual are quite exciting. Actually the MM as a whole has a lot of great ideas in it.

do the basic rules cover use of a hand crossbow expert?

If you are looking for the basic differences between editions, then the basic rules should suffice.

If you are looking for great 5E ideas for other classes, feats, and spells, you should probably pony up the bucks and just go buy it.

How about these:

- inspiration

- backgrounds' tables of traits/ideals/flaws/bonds

- the optional turn-based rules for adventuring

- rituals (you'd have to choose which spells)

These seem reasonably plug-and-play into older editions to me.

i've yet to play, see, or even look at 5ed other than read threads in this forum at ENW. how do i convert it to other editions? aka what do i need from this edition that is new and different and will be great to add to my current campaign?

Hmm the older editions pretty much have an answer to lots of problems.
From this edition you might consider the concentration mechanic for casters.
And possibly advantage/disadvantage with saving throws.
If you don't allow retainers or henchman for high-level PCs some of the more basic powers for PCs might work.

Curt is right. That stuff would convert to OD&D with no problem at all.

I second this suggestion.

YES! This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Check the Monster Manual out; it's got some great art (personally, when I use a monster, I try to show the pcs the best picture of it that D&D has ever come up with).
