D&D 5E Cantrips

As a side note, whenever I think of cantrips I think of a scene early on in the movie Dragonslayer. There is a book on a table, and the wizard gestures and the book slides to him. Even in 2nd edition, I gave wizards unlimited uses of the cantrip spell for minor "flavorful" effects of that nature.

I always think of that tall, gaunt wizard in Wormy calling his hat back from across the room. Same idea. :)

I would love to see more done with cantrips. I am personally a huge fan of them, and although I do like some of the new "combat cantrips," I think they've lost some of the original flavor. To me, cantrips have always been the "role playing" spells that allowed the spellcaster to keep doing magic throughout the day. A while back I made a video about it here.

I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on cantrips and their uses.

Gothnog's Magnificent Cantrips -- Fifth Edition

I think 5e expects wizards to use their cantrips for more than just 'role playing' (though they are good for that). The combat cantrips can carry quite a bit of load for a low level wizard. And quite a bit of practical utility can be squeezed out of some of the others.

In my opinion, every Mage should automatically get Prestidigitation, every Cleric should have Thaumaturgy, every Druid should get Druidcraft (and every Fighter should be able to perform katas, every Rogue should be able to set up a game of Three-card Monte, etc.)

Prest/Thau seem like nobrainers to me. The amount of annoyance the Wizard and Cleric have brought me with those two spells are insane.

On that note though, is it possible to learn more cantrips? The 2 extra spells you learn at level up specifically mention that they'd have to be for a spell level you have slots for - which cantrips do not.
It seems silly that a mage user only has the starting cantrips and stick with the for the rest of their lives.
Consufed.

All the casters that gain cantrips get more as they level as shown on the class abilities progression chart, all if not most get an additional cantrip at 4th level.

Its a cantrip. They can cast it before each and every skill check a party member makes (except in the middle of combat, then the action to cast the spell kicks in and limits it).

Rogue checks for trap. Guided.
Bard makes a performance. Guided.
Paladin questions a demon. Guided.
Ranger tracks a goat. Guided.
etc...
